  • Please take a look at our most recent Blog post, Fast works and high Prices at sales rarely equal racetrack success

  • We are very excited to announce the addition of a new horse. We are in the process of completing the private purchase of a 3 year old filly with pedigree and an established race record at a great price. Assuming everything goes through as expected, we will have the details shortly out to Triple Crown members and then to all current co-owners. As with Blu Candy – our Candy Ride filly from last month’s Fasig-Tipton sale, we expect this group to sell out very quickly (likely will be oversubscribed) so watch for a separate email and please respond promptly.

Friday was a terrific night of racing that will not soon be forgotten….

  • New Found Treasure came out of an excellent 2nd and was poised for a winning race and didn’t disappoint, sitting off a fast early pace and flying down the stretch to win going away in race 1 at Penn National. A huge congratulations to Mark Salvaggio who is on fire this month and all her owners. This honest filly is a really nice grass horse and there’s plenty of turf ahead this season for her.
  • Then Rapstorerocks was at the right level and distance looking for two in a row off a fine maiden win and ran an exceptional race in race 11 at Penn National. Well back early as the leader opened up a seemingly insurmountable lead, he commenced a sustained run to gain contention as another horse rallied beside him. At the wire it was a three horse photo and Rapstore put his head up at exactly the right time to get the nod, winning a three horse photo by two short heads. When you’re hot, you’re hot and Kenwood is on fire. Jockey Julio Hernandez deserves a special shout out for some outstanding race riding on all our horses recently, and of course Mark Salvaggio has done his usual great training job for us. And a shout out to our partner Ralph Pastore who named this horse and has been on fire with us this month. Congrats. to everyone on one amazing month.
  • First up Wednesday evening was No Good Deed at Penn National. She drew the absolute worst possible #1 post but had been training super, so we were expecting a big race from her if she could work out a decent trip and she didn’t disappoint. Fortunately she broke like a shot and made the lead easily; once she was alone on the lead it was over as she never was threatened, winning by two lengths after being geared down inside the 16th pole when 6 lengths in front. She literally would have won by 10 if the rider had kept asking her (he did the right thing by wrapping up on her once it was clear she was going to win by daylight and even with that she was more than 11 lengths ahead of the 3rd horse). The race was run in a fast time for the level on a sloppy track and off this impressive maiden win we have reason to think she can be a nice filly and win more races for us properly spotted. On a personal note, No Good Deed was named by yours truly to honor my late father Norman Levinsky (who always used to tell us jokingly “no good deed goes unpunished”) so as with Giuliana Vee (just below) the long awaited maiden victory was especially sweet. Congratulations to our partner Ralph Pastore and all our co-owners!
  • A few races later Giuliana Vee drew in from the also eligible list and got to run from a favorable outside spot at Penn National. Despite coming back on just 2 weeks rest off her debut win she ran another huge race, finishing a very game 2nd in a photo finish.  She sat off the pace early, made a terrific sustained drive from the 3/8 pole to get right next to the leader by just couldn’t go by her in the final strides, coming up a head short at the wire. Very likely with a little more time between races she’d have got the win but it was a super race to end another big night for Kenwood runners on a high note. This filly has matured into an honest, consistent runner and we are very pleased. If you haven’t read it yet, take a look at this great story on Giuliana here.
  • In other news, Seven Seven excellent out of his work yesterday at Monmouth Park. He’ll either make his debut at Saratoga or at Monmouth Park, depending on what comes up first.

  • Fire's Finale galloping well after his arrival at Monmouth Park this week from Florida (brief video). Looking for a spot for him at Monmouth Park or Parx.
  • Both of our recent additions to the stable doing very well. Tracy Ann’s Legacy and Highwaytwentyseven were both claimed Sunday afternoon at Monmouth Park. Highwaytwentyseven, a three year old gelding who runs short on the dirt, ran decently when third as the favorite, a neck behind the 2nd horse in a photo after chasing the early pace of the winner. Meanwhile Tracy Ann’s Legacy, a four year old grass filly, went to the lead and never looked back, winning by nearly 5 lengths in a very fast time, by far the fastest of the day for the distance and less than 1 second off the time the male star Archidust posted when winning Saturday’s Wolf Hill Stakes at Monmouth the day before. Both horses look like solid claims and we look forward to them making their debuts for us next month at Monmouth Park.
  • Pango was entered at Penn National and got in for next Friday, trying the grass, doing well, but a super tough spot.
  • Life on the Edge good out of her excellent 2nd Haskell day at Monmouth Park. She’s a nice honest filly and is ready for the winner’s circle with a decent draw – trip next time.
  • Our Candy Ride – Tiz Blu filly is now officially named Blu Candy. She has settled in nicely since arriving at Monmouth Park.
  • Lisa Limon and her Liam’s Map foal well at Hidden Brook Farm in Ky. Hard to find a better looking horse, see photo. He was recently weaned and is doing excellent.

Another very good night for Kenwood Racing runners Wednesday night! We’re off to an exceptional start for the second half of the year, with three wins and three seconds from seven starts in July so far. We are expecting this to continue to be a really good summer and fall for our stable. Congratulations to all our owners on your wins this month with No Good Deed and Rapstorerocks, a win and a photo finish 2nd for Giuliana Vee, plus an excellent 2nd on Haskell Day for Life On the Edge!

Two more races on tap tonight (Friday) at Penn Nationalas we look to build on a fantastic month….

  • Rapstorerocks in an excellent spot at Penn National. Right level and distance as he shoots for two wins in a row.
  • New Found Treasure comes out of an excellent 2nd at Penn National and should run well again here in a full, competitive field. Ran hard and well despite coming back a bit quick on just 10 days rest last time, here she has a little more time off between races and a better post.
  • In other news, Seven Seven excellent out of his work yesterday at Monmouth Park. He’ll either make his debut at Saratoga or at Monmouth Park, depending on what comes up first.

  • We’re pleased to announce the addition of two promising horses to the stable. Tracy Ann's Legacy and Highwaytwentyseven were both claimed Sunday afternoon at Monmouth Park. Highwaytwentyseven, a three year old gelding who runs short on the dirt, ran decently when third as the favorite, a neck behind the 2nd horse in a photo after chasing the early pace of the winner (“dug in and lost 2nd at the wire” – official chart). Meanwhile Tracy Ann’s Legacy, a four year old grass filly, went to the lead and never looked back, winning by nearly 5 lengths in a very fast time (“responded when roused and kicked away” – official chart). Her winning time, by far the fastest of the day for the distance, was less than 1 second off the time the male star Archidust posted when winning Saturday’s Wolf Hill Stakes at Monmouth Park on Haskell Day (“Archidust ran 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in 1:01.26 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 95” - DRF).

Both horses look like solid claims and we look forward to them making their debuts for us next month at Monmouth.

Four entries scheduled for this week at Penn National after a busy weekend at Monmouth…

  • No Good Deed in Wednesday at Penn National. Drew the absolute worst possible #1 post, other than that doing super so if she can work out a decent a trip from there expecting a big race from her.
  • A wonderful, heartwarming story behind recent winner Giuliana Vee which you can read here. She’s entered for Wednesday at Penn National and on the also eligible list; #12, only 10 can run, so unless at least 2 horses scratch by Wed. morning she will NOT run. If she does get in she’ll have the best post and a great shot to run well if she can handle coming back on short rest.
  • Rapstorerocks in Friday at Penn National, an excellent spot. Right level and distance as he shoots for two wins in a row.
  • New Found Treasure also in Friday at Penn National, comes out of an excellent 2nd and should run well again here in a full, competitive field. Ran hard and well despite coming back a bit quick on just 10 days rest last time, here she has a little more time off between races and a better post
  • Fire's Finale good and happy after his arrival at Monmouth Park, no issues (see photo & brief video). Looking for a spot for him at Monmouth Park or Parx.
  • Pango doing well and will be entered Friday for a grass race next week at Penn.
  • Life On the Edge good out of her excellent 2nd Haskell day at Monmouth Park. She’s a nice honest filly and is ready for the winner’s circle with a decent draw – trip next time.
  • Our Candy Ride – Tiz Blu filly (name submitted today) for new group #59 has settled in nicely since arriving at Monmouth Park.

We’re certainly off to a fine start for the second half of the year overall, with two seconds and two wins in July so far. We are expecting this to be a really good summer and fall for Kenwood runners.

Lots of exciting new entries! Here’s the place for the details.

  • Life on the Edge was an excellent, fast closing 2nd today on Haskell day at Monmouth Park. Not to make excuses but the rail cost her the win here when beaten just 1&1/2 lengths while far ahead of the rest of the field, just as it did last time at Delaware Park when she also drew the rail and was 4th, beaten 2 lengths for the win. The rail is generally the worst draw for almost any horse, even more so for her as she runs best when in the clear. Trevor McCarthy sat a patient stalking trip and finally found room at the top of the stretch, once he swung her out and in the clear she came flying and just ran out of room at a distance a bit short for her. She’s a nice honest filly and is ready for the winner’s circle with a decent draw – trip next time.
  • Rapstorerocks gets in next Friday at Penn National in an excellent spot. Right level and distance as he shoots for two wins in a row.
  • New Found Treasure also in next Friday at Penn National, comes out of an excellent 2nd at Penn last time and should run well again here in a full, competitive field. Ran hard and well despite coming back a bit quick on just 10 days rest last time, here she has a little more time off between races and a better post.
  • No Good Deed good out of an excellent work and gets in the entries next Wednesday at Penn National. Drew the absolute worst possible #1 post, other than that doing super so if she can work out a decent a trip from there expecting a big race from her.
  • Giuliana Vee doing so well we entered her for next Wednesday at Penn National and the race went, BUT she’s on the also eligible, #12, only 10 can run, so unless at least 2 horses scratch by next Wed. morning she will NOT run (if you email us and say “I saw Giuliana Vee was running but now I don’t see her in the race” we will refer you to this email). If she does get in she’ll have the best post and a great shot to run well if she can handle coming back on short rest off her win.
  • Fire’s Finale arrived safely at Monmouth Park this morning, no issues. He’s with Kelly Breen and will be pointed to races at Monmouth and Parx – Penn (where he receives bonus purse monies as a Pa. Bred). He’s coming out of a fine debut at Gulfstream when a good 3rd. Off this nice effort we are looking forward to an exciting career with him this summer and beyond.
  • Seven Seven good after a very nice breeze from the gate at Monmouth Park, as he approaches his debut. It was another fast time which will make the owners (and us) happy, but what makes us more pleased is the way he did it; under wraps, easily keeping up with the older horse he worked with. He’s close to his debut now. Maybe one or two more works and run if all keeps going well.

  • Our Candy Ride – Tiz Blu filly (name coming shortly) for new group #59 has settled in nicely since arriving at Monmouth Park and had her first timed work from the gate today (below). It was one of the fastest works of the day-distance but honestly any horse can work in 37 seconds. What matters to us is she went well and is moving in the right direction.

General News

  • The OBS sale began today in Ocala. We had one horse to bid on today that we did not get, several others failed the vet exam. Three more sale days to go so still plenty of opportunity. Many people felt if you wanted to buy a horse at a bargain this would be the place to do it, but it was a surprisingly solid sale for the opening day (average slightly up, median slightly down), featuring for the first time live internet bidding. In a sale like this, some people will protect their horses with strong reserves if they like them and race if they don’t sell, but there are more than a few people here who pin hooked on bank credit and absolutely have to take what the market offers at this point. If we are lucky one of these horses will not get a lot of attention and we’ll buy a quality runner for a value price. If not, we just will pass. Group #59 sold out in 72 hours with 9 people shut out a couple weeks ago and we’re hoping to find one or two more opportunities for our valued co-owners in the final major two year old sale of 2020. Stay tuned and thanks for your support!
  • Our next online seminar this Thursday Race entries and the condition book is an absolute must for all owners who want to learn more about an essential and complex part of the game. You can join without an RSVP using the link below but if you wish to attend we highly recommend you reserve your space in advance by emailing Jack@kenwoodracing.com . We have a large group of signups already; all welcome but current co-owners get priority.
  • All updated entry information on your horses can be found at Equibase or on our entries page.  Please remember, ‘entered’ does NOT mean the horse is running, it means they will be entered in a race that may or may not go, that the horse may or may not get into. If you want to learn more about how the process works, our seminar this Thursday is a must!

A special shout out to trainer Ron Spatz, who did his usual excellent job getting this nice colt ready for his debut in Florida.
  • Giuliana Vee excellent out of her exciting maiden win at Penn National. Might come back end of next week on short rest if the race goes and she keeps doing this well. Hopefully she’ll build on her win and have a good summer for us.
  • Rapstorerocks excellent out of his nice win at Penn National and will be entered this Friday for a race next week looking for two wins in a row. He’s nicely positioned for a good season at Penn now.

General News

  • Given the exceptionally high level of interest in 2 year olds from our owners (Group #59 sold out in 72 hours with 9 people shut out, thank you!), we will be attending the OBS July 2yo sale next week looking for one or two more horses for the stable. This will be the final opportunity for this year to purchase a nice two year old at public auction. The under tack show this week has been very sparsely attended. Not many people are going to make the trip to Ocala, Florida in July at the moment and everyone is anticipating an incredible buyer’s market. Stay tuned and thanks for your support!
  • Don’t miss our next online seminar, which by popular request will be on Race entries and the condition book on July 16th at 7:30 pm EDT A must for all owners who want to learn more about this vital and complex part of the game. As those of you who have attended previous seminars know, we’ve had 25-30 people and space is limited (with priority given to current co-owners). If you wish to attend, please reserve your space in advance by emailing Jack@kenwoodracing.com.

  • Pango had no real excuse when 5th this evening at Penn National. He sat a good trip, in tight a bit but just didn’t fire. It was a sloppy track and a competitive group and a fast run race for the level but all that said his best effort was good enough to make him very competitive here. We’re certainly off to a fine start for the second half of the year overall, with a 2nd and two wins in July so far and we are expecting this to be a really good summer and fall for Kenwood runners.

  • Giuliana Vee got in a great spot with a perfect post this evening at Penn National and took advantage of it, sitting just off the early pace in 5th, making a move on the far turn to gain contention, and finally wearing down the leader (who had the advantage of a long uncontested lead) in the final stride to win by a neck in a photo finish. It was an exciting win for this honest, hard trying filly after several close on-the-board efforts. After her last effort at Laurel Park, we said “She’d been off several months and unable to train much at Penn while no racing…The race should clearly have her fit and ready for her next start and we expect a big effort next time at Penn in a few weeks” and tonight she delivered on that prediction. Sometimes it takes time with horses; there’s an old saying “there’s 1 way to win a race and 100 ways to lose one”. Tonight things went her way and she got the job done. Hopefully she’ll build on this and have a good summer for us. We’re certainly off to a fine start for the second half of the year overall, with a 2nd and two wins in July so far.
  • Seven Seven had another nice breeze Monday at Monmouth Park, as he approaches his debut. Doing excellent. Here’s a training video from Monday.

  • New Found Treasure good out of an excellent 2nd at Penn National. Ran hard and well despite coming back a bit quick on just 10 days rest. She should be fit and ready for distance grass races all summer now.
  • Life on the Edge good out of her race at Delaware Park, beaten just 2 lengths for the win in a much improved effort. Kelly Breen feels confident she’ll run very well at Monmouth next time.
  • Fire’s Finale excellent out of a fine debut at Gulfstream. Off this nice effort we have even more reason to believe he’s a talented horse and we are looking forward to an exciting career with him. Congratulations to all his owners!
  • Our Liam’s Map – Lisa Limon foal well at Hidden Brook Farm in Ky. Hard to find a better looking horse than this. Lisa is back in foal and doing well and so far it’s been nothing but good news for this group.

General News

  • We are very pleased to announce that group #59 was totally sold out in record time. We had an online drawing Monday evening with 10 interested people for the one available share for non-Triple Crown Club members. Congratulations to Co-Owner Seven Fliegelman, who will be the final member of this exciting group. The Candy Ride (ARG) filly is at Monmouth Park and training towards her debut. See video.
  • Given the exceptionally high level of interest in owning another 2 year old from our owners, we will be attending the OBS July 2yo sale next week looking for one or two more horses for the stable. This will be the final opportunity for this year to purchase a nice two year old at public auction. The under tack show began today and was very sparsely attended. Not many people are going to make the trip to Ocala in July at the moment and everyone is anticipating an incredible buyer’s market. Stay tuned and thanks for your support!
  • Monmouth Park opened with a full weekend of exciting racing featuring large fields, competitive racing, and good horses. Lots of new trainers and jockeys on hand this year. There are some significant limitations given the COVID-19 virus (read TDN article), but racing has returned to the Jersey Shore.

We thank you for your support of our program. You can see some photos of our newest addition to the stable training this morning at Monmouth Park. She’s a lovely Candy Ride filly, the first foal out of a full sister to famed racehorse and sire Colonel John.
  • Another large group for our online event via GoToMeeting last night. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend. Look for another seminar later this month.
  • Monmouth Park opened today, with a full weekend of exciting racing ahead. Large fields, competitive racing, good horses. Lots of new trainers and jockeys on hand this year.

  • Rapstorerocks sat a nice trip, made his move to take over the lead in the stretch, and won by a clear two lengths while confidently ridden as the heavy favorite this evening at Penn National. Nice win and a hearty congratulations to all the owners, including our partners Degaetano and Pastore Inc. whose owner, Ralph Pastore, named this handsome horse! We said going in we were looking for a win and we got it. He’s nicely positioned for a good season at Penn National now.
  • Pango arrived to trainer Mark Salvaggio at Penn National from Gulfstream Park this week in search of softer spots than he has run in recently. He arrived well and happy, see photo. There was a race to enter in today that was the right spot and it went so he’s in for next Friday, July 10th at Penn. Didn’t come up as easy as we’d have hoped and a full field so we’ll look at our options here.
  • No Good Deed will be entered tomorrow for a race at Delaware Park next Wednesday, doing well.
  • Giuliana Vee gets in the entries at Penn National on Wednesday, a great spot, a perfect post, no excuses here, just needs to fire her best and get a decent trip to make it to the winner’s circle.
  • Seven Seven making steady progress towards his debut which should come towards the end of July. You can see some nice photos of him training this morning at Monmouth Park. He’ll have some gate work now and breeze again next week.
  • New Found Treasure good out of an excellent 2nd this at Penn National. Ran hard and well despite coming back a bit quick on just 10 days rest. She should be fit and ready for distance grass races all summer now.
  • Life on the Edge good out of her race at Delaware Park, beaten just 2 lengths for the win in a much improved effort. Kelly Breen feels confident she’ll run very well at Monmouth Parknext time.

General News

  • One unique and exciting value priced filly joins the Kenwood Racing barn, hip #318 from the Fasig-Tipton 2yo sale in Maryland. Our team scoured the sale looking for high quality horses at attractive prices and at the end, came close on several of our top choices but were unwilling to pay top dollar in a strong market. We were very fortunate to get what we did, group #59 was offered to our Triple Crown Club members today and if there are any shares left, all other co-owners will have a first-come, first served opportunity beginning Friday. Stay tuned!
  • Our next online event via GoToMeeting will be held Thursday, July 2nd at 7:30pm. The meeting will offer a status report for all your horses, the latest updates on the racing season at Monmouth Park which begins the following day, plus a discussion of the just concluded Fasig-Tipton 2 year old sale and an opportunity for your comments and questions. Please join us!
  • Monmouth Park opens for live racing this Friday, a fun summer ahead!

Horse by Horse News

  • New Found Treasure was an excellent 2nd this evening at Penn National. The heavily favored winner got loose on a long lead and she just couldn’t run her down but she was clear of the rest of the large field while doing everything right from the far outside post. Ran hard and well despite coming back a bit quick on just 10 days rest. She’s much better on the turf and while she tried on the dirt last winter and did manage one win and several placings, she should be fit and ready for distance grass races all summer now.
  • Giuliana Vee gets in the entries at Penn National next Wednesday, a great spot, a perfect post, no excuses here, just needs to fire her best and get a decent trip to make it to the winner’s circle.
  • Rapstorerocks runs Friday in a good spot at Penn National; if he runs back to his last race and gets a decent trip he has a great shot to end up in the winner’s circle
  • No Good Deed doing well, she didn’t get in the same race Giuliana Vee got in at Penn National (we entered both and the race overfilled). Hopefully the same race will come back for her next week, she’s doing excellent.
  • Seven Seven good out of another fine work at Monmouth Park.  He’s making steady progress towards his debut which should come towards the end of July. He’ll have some gate work now as he approaches his debut.

Seven Seven (2-Year-Old Colt)
Date: June 29, 2020
Track: MONMOUTH PARK
Distance: Three Furlongs
Time: 36:40 Breezing
Track Condition: Fast
Surface: Dirt
Rank: 11/42

  • Life on the Edge good out of her race at Delaware Park, beaten just 2 lengths for the win in a much improved effort. The difference was the very unfavorable inside post, which meant she was stuck on the rail and pressured throughout. When she finally got some running room in the stretch she rebroke nicely and ran hard to the wire. With an outside post and a different trip here, she was the winner. That’s literally just the luck of the draw. She was not claimed (as we expected she wouldn’t be) and we are glad because she’s honestly a much better horse on the turf and despite a rough start to her 3 year old season she’s sound and has talent.  Kelly Breen feels confident she’ll run very well at Monmouth Park next time.
  • Fire’s Finale excellent out of a fine debut at Gulfstream Park. Off this nice effort, we have even more reason to believe he’s a talented horse and we are looking forward to an exciting career with him. Congratulations to all his owners!

General News

  • No purchases today at a shockingly strong opening day of the Fasig-Tipton 2yo sale in Maryland (read TDN article). Our team scoured the sale looking for high quality horses at attractive prices and at the end of day one, came close on two of our top choices but were unwilling to pay top dollar in a strong market. We attended this sale because all indications were for obvious reasons this would be a buyer’s market, but that clearly was not the case today. We do have four horses for tomorrow that were in our absolute top group and if one or two of them fall through the cracks and/or the sale slows down on day 2, we’ll be there. In March, we bought Seven Seven after getting shut out early at what is more and more looking like a super value price (he just had another excellent work today at Monmouth Park and if he had been in this sale, he would have almost certainly brought a lot more than we paid for him) and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something similar tomorrow. As our loyal owners know, unlike syndicates who use client money and mark up horses, our interests are firmly aligned with yours because we invest our own money in every horse we buy, all with NO markups. When we buy a horse you know we feel we got something really worth owning at the right price. All the horses on our final bid list have been personally selected by trainer Kelly Breen and our team; with luck we’ll be able to come home with one of the select group we really want tomorrow. Stay tuned!

  • Seven Seven had another fine work this morning at Monmouth Park, in company, quick without being pressured. He’s making steady progress towards his debut which should come towards the end of July. He’ll have some gate work now, as he approaches his debut.

  • Rapstorerocks runs July 3rd in a good spot at Penn National; if he runs back to his last race and gets a decent trip he has a great shot to end up in the winner’s circle.
  • New Found Treasure runs Wed. at Penn National. The good news is, it’s just the right spot. The bad news is she got the very unfavorable far outside post in an overflow field and it’s back in just 10 days, but she’s doing well and should be fit and ready for this and other distance grass races all summer.
