Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for April 4, 2020

Horse by Horse News

  • Trilby was a good third in her Kenwood debut for our active racing group #58. Parked three wide throughout in a 12 horse field, she was forced 6 wide when making a bold move on the far turn and was still near the back of the pack in mid-stretch but sustained a strong run to just get up for 3rd in the final stride. With not many tracks running anywhere, every race is overfilled and exceptionally competitive and this one was no exception. That said, she tried hard and with a little better trip would have been right there.  Looks like a solid claim and a nice filly for our new group.
  • Rapstorerocks runs at Gulfstream Park on Thursday. An overflow 16 horse field (12 with 4 on the also eligible list). Will run and then likely ship to Penn National.

Several nice works to report today…

  • “I breezed Pango this morning, went quite well, 49 & a couple, out in 102 and change. Came back scoped clean and so far cooled out well”, Ron Spatz. There’s a race for him next week at Gulfstream Park that we are pointing him for.
  • Life on the Edge had a nice breeze today at Palm Meadows. “The horse I breezed her with last time got hurt and needed a few days off so I breezed her by herself this morning. She went really well, nice and easy and did everything right”, Kelly Breen. You can see a video of her work. She really looks great!
  • New Found Treasure, Giuliana Vee and No Good Deed all well at Penn National, waiting for races for them somewhere. No Good Deed had a nice work today (see below). All are training fine and ready to run, you can see some nice photos of all of them from Mark Salvaggio (attached) as they headed out for their works. Treasure and Giuliana had fine maintenance works yesterday and came out of them well.
  • A shame Lookinlikeaqueen had be scratched for today’s race at Gulfstream Park. She was better this morning, no fever and it does not seem serious. There’s another race for her in a couple of weeks and hopefully she’ll be ready for that one.
  • Night of Idiots was entered for this weekend at Golden Gate Fields, but racing has now been cancelled there until further notice.
  • Our super 2yo out of Exchanging Fire excellent in Ocala and ready to ship to Monmouth Park when it opens for training (hopefully towards the end of April).

General News

  • As usual, you can find updated entry information on your horses at Equibase or our entries page on our website.
  • Lisa Limon was bred today to top young sire Palace Malice. She and her foal by another top young sire, Liam’s Map, are both doing great.
  • We’re down to final two shares in our new group #57. Details on our current offerings page on our website. Thanks to all for the support! Our beautiful Laoban colt is with trainer Rory Huston at Overbrook Farm in New Jersey, just waiting for Monmouth Park to open.

Two entries today for Saturday at Gulfstream Park and both horses got in.

  • Trilby and Lookinlikeaqueen both are in overflow fields at Gulfstream Park on Saturday for our new active racing group #58. With not many tracks running anywhere every race is overfilled and every race will be exceptionally competitive. That said, both get good riders and both are doing very well for their Kenwood debuts. You can see a nice photo of Trilby attached courtesy of trainer Ron Spatz. Should have photos of Lookinlikeaqueen and Pango soon.
  • Rapstorerocks good at Palm Meadows and will be entered this Friday at Gulfstream Park.
  • Night of Idiots will be entered tomorrow for this weekend at Golden Gate Fields.
  • Pango good at Gulfstream Park and will be entered next week
  • Life On The Edge  excellent out of her breeze last weekend at Palm Meadows and should breeze again this weekend. “I’ve been training her in company (with another horse) and it really picked her head up, she’s going great now”, Kelly Breen. Here’s a video of the work.
  • New Found Treasure, Giuliana Vee and No Good Deed all well at Penn National, waiting for races for them somewhere. All are training fine and ready to run.
  • Our super 2yo out of Exchanging Fire excellent in Ocala and ready to ship to Monmouth Park when it opens for training (hopefully towards the end of April).

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for March 26, 2020

March 28, 2020 at 10:10 am • By Robb Levinsky

Horse by Horse News

  • Nice article from the Thoroughbred Daily New (TDN) yesterday mentioning Laoban, sire of our beautiful colt for group #57. We were so fortunate to buy a stellar physical individual by a promising young sire, out of a young dam who won 7 races and over $220,000 on the track, at a sale where a horse of this quality was available at a genuine value. Details of partnership opportunities available here.
  • Good work today for Trilby at Gulfstream Park (below). “Good morning Robb, just to let you know Trilby had a lovely workout this morning. She started out very relaxed and had a nice gallop out, 48 & change and 102, pretty easily and I’m very happy with that”, Ron Spatz
  • “Open galloped Pango this morning, just a 2 minute lick, he’s doing really well”, Ron Spatz.
  • “The filly, Lookinlikeaqueen, I don’t think I’ll breeze her coming up to this race. I prefer just gallops up to the race. She gallops plenty strong and she’s plenty fit”, Ron Spatz
  • New Found Treasure, Giuliana Vee and No Good Deed are all well at Penn National, waiting for races for them somewhere. Trainer Mark Salvaggio took these photos of all of them, not the best photos, but you can see all are training fine and ready to run.
  • Night of Idiots was entered today for Sunday at Golden Gate Fields but race did not go. Another entry next week.
  • Rapstorerocks fine out of his race yesterday where he was 5th of 12 horses at Gulfstream Park with absolutely no excuse. He drew the highly unfavorable #12 post but Paco Lopez rode a perfect race, getting him into a stalking position close to the leaders by the first turn without having to use him too hard. He sat a dream trip, made a bold move turning for home and looked like a winner, but flattened out in the stretch.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for March 24, 2020

March 25, 2020 at 8:17 am • By Robb Levinsky

General News

  • A good time to enjoy some photos of Lisa Limon & her stunning Liam’s Map foal enjoying life at Hidden Brook Farm in Kentucky. Thanks to farm manager Sergio De Sousa for his excellent care and the super photos!
  • Some recent races from former Kenwood Racing runners worth noting:
  1. Smarty Cat: claimed from us last summer for $40,000, 8th beaten over 15 lengths March 21st at Tampa for $16,000.
  2. Two Fifty Coup: claimed from us summer of 2018 for $50,000, just won at Los Alamitos March 21st, for $5,000.
  3. More Ice: Sold privately last fall for $50,000, has not won since. Was entered last week for $30,000 at The Fairgrounds (racing was cancelled that day, so he did not run)

These are just a few of many, many similar examples of horses that have significantly declined in value since they left our barn. Some owners (understandably) find it very difficult emotionally when ‘their’ horse is claimed away. The facts clearly show, again and again, year after year, that in the overwhelming majority of cases, they were very well sold indeed. If we had held on to the above horses we would have collectively lost tens of thousands of dollars and the co-owners would have received absolutely nothing instead of a payout at the end of the group, not to mention the fact the horses have done little or nothing on the track since they were claimed-sold. Running in the right spots and being ready to sell at the right time is, as much as anything, the key to success in this game.

Horse by Horse News

  • We’d like to thank everyone for the very good response to our new group #57. It’s not yet fully sold but getting close. It’s a real tribute to our loyal co-owners in these challenging times. We are truly grateful for your support!

  • Rapstorerocks is scheduled to run tomorrow at Gulfstream Park. Now it’s 12 horses, not 9, and we drew the highly unfavorable #12 post but at least he’s back in the entries. Doing really well. We’d love to see a couple of scratches to give him a slightly more favorable post position; awful hard to win from post 12 with a short run to the first turn, you need a perfect trip and a lot of racing luck, but Paco Lopez is a terrific rider and the horse is ready to roll.
  • All good news so far for our new active racing group #58 as trainer Ron Spatz reports all three horses are training forwardly at Gulfstream Park. Pango could run back in a sprint in a couple of weeks. There is a race for Trilby the first week of April to look at. There is a separate race also at Gulfstream Park for Lookinlikeaqueen the same day as Trilby or another later in the month.
  • Life On The Edge fine out of her first breeze since returning to training at Palm Meadows, and should breeze again shortly. Here’s the video, thanks to Kelly Breen.
  • New Found Treasure, Giuliana Vee and No Good Deed all well at Penn National, waiting for races for them somewhere.

  • Good entry news as the race for Rapstorerocks went again for Wednesday, March 25th at Gulfstream Park. It's race 1. Now it’s 12 horses, not 9, and we drew the highly unfavorable #12 post but at least he’s back in the entries. Doing really well.
  • Our new group #57 will be released shortly, one truly special horse, bred to go classic distances yet showing sprinter speed at the sale.  Hip #492, a New York bred colt who worked a swift 10.1 and is exceptionally good looking by top young son of Uncle Mo, Laoban, out of a fine young mare from a quality black type family. Amazingly strong and mature, especially for a May foal.

  • Success today at the OBS March sale! After getting outbid on several nice horses, we took home the colt we liked the best in the entire sale, Hip #492, a New York bred colt who worked a swift 10.1 and is exceptionally good looking by top young son of Uncle Mo, Laoban, out of a fine young mare from a quality black type family. Horse owners are a tough breed, horses changing hands for literally hundreds of thousands of dollars despite a world crisis. Sale was sharply down in averages as one would expect at this time, but still plenty of money for good horses and we didn’t get any of the other 5 top prospects we bid on. We are highly disciplined value buyers; if we can buy a quality horse at a value price we pull the trigger, if not we keep our powder dry and wait for another sale. We invest our own $ in every horse and treat your money like ours

  • Lisa Limon and her beautiful foal by Liam’s Map doing super in Kentucky at Hidden Brook Farm. See this video, hard to find a more beautiful baby or a more attentive mother.
  • Rapstorerocks in at Gulfstream Park for Friday with top rider Paco Lopez aboard. As of now, still running at Gulfstream Park. Doing well and looking for a breakthrough effort here.
  • New Found Treasure and No Good Deed were in good spots at Penn National, but racing there is cancelled for several weeks. New Found Treasure got in a race at Charles Town in W.V., for Friday, but that track cancelled too. Hopefully we’ll find something for her and No Good Deed and Giuliana Vee also somewhere.
  • All three horses for our active racing group claimed last week doing really well. Pango, Lookinlikeaqueen and Trilby all should be ready to go in April for us at Gulfstream Park, one of the few tracks still running fortunately. Here are photos trainer Ron Spatz took of all three today. All are doing well.
  • Life On The Edge doing well at Palm Meadows in Florida. Set to breeze shortly and hopefully run at Gulfstream Park towards the end of April.

May the horse be with the entire Kenwood Family in these difficult days!
