Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for January 29, 2020
Results and entries
For upcoming race dates for your horses, read below and look here.
- No luck at all with either horse today, with no excuses for either one. First, Rapstorerocks got a fine trip from the #1 post with top rider Luis Saez and plain didn’t fire, finishing 7th of 9 horses, with no excuse. Sat a comfortable trip in 3rd much of the way and just didn’t have any kick when asked for run. After a good race in NY this fall has tossed in two straight clunkers at Gulfstream Park.
- Then New Found Treasure sat a fine stalking trip at Penn National, moved up to 3rd on the first turn with dead aim on the leaders and flattened out to finish 5th. This filly has had a win and four thirds in nine starts for us and always tries hard. Just got tired late.
- Giuliana Vee runs February 1st at Penn National and is doing really well.
- Night of Idiots good, enter tomorrow for Feb. 2nd at Golden Gate Fields.
- Solar good, there’s a race for him Feb. 7th to enter in at Gulfstream.
- No Good Deed excellent out of her debut race at Gulfstream Park. There’s a race for her in early February we are pointing for
- Magic Musketier has been turned out at the farm.
- Life on the Edge at the farm in Ocala and couldn’t look or be doing better. Will ship back into Kelly Breen next month at Palm Meadows.
- Lisa Limon excellent at the farm in Kentucky, looking forward to a nice healthy baby in February.
- Our beautiful 2yo out of Exchanging Fire for group #56 in training at T-Square stud in Ocala and doing super.
Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for January 25, 2020
4th and claimed, new entries
Bullion was an honest 4th today at Oaklawn Park. Broke perfectly, had a dream trip outside of 2 battling horses and just couldn’t sustain his bid while trying hard the entire way. It was a contentious 12 horse field and he never gave up, so not a bad effort, but that said he was favored in here and we had expected a better finish so not a bad thing at all to see him claimed from us as expected.
Lots of upcoming race dates for your horses, read below and look here.
- Race went today for Giuliana Vee, she runs February 1st at Penn National and is doing really well.
- Rapstorerocks runs next Wednesday at Gulfstream Park, the usual overflow field. Gets the #1 post with top rider Luis Saez
- New Found Treasure also runs next Wednesday, she’s at Penn National in a 7 horse field and is training well. This filly has had a win and four thirds in eight starts for us and always tries hard.
Looking forward to our season kickoff event on January 31st. Everyone attending in person will receive a discount on our next group that will be detailed at the meeting
Finally, you’ve heard-read us on many occasions criticize our industry for not putting the welfare of horses and owners first. That said, some of racing’s harshest critics (many of whom are well-intended) are grossly misinformed about basic facts pertaining to the lives-lifecycles of horses. Injuries-deaths at a racetrack, as sad and painful as they are, do not exist in a vacuum. The fact is in the wild the percentage of injuries-deaths are MUCH higher than at a racetrack, a training center, a farm, or almost anywhere else under human care. To understand why race horses get injured and are euthanized you need to understand the physical makeup of horses in general. There is little difference between a race horse taking a bad step on the track and a horse in a pasture or in the wild taking a bad step. The result is the same. According to the BLM (Federal Bureau of Land Management), 50% of wild horses do not make it to year one. Another 25% don't live to year two. In other words, in the wild 75% of all horses die, most from illness and injuries, before their 2nd birthday. So when people outside the gates of Santa Anita hold up signs saying “one death is too many”, it’s frankly total nonsense from people who do not understand that nature of this magnificent, but highly fragile breed. None of which is to absolve our industry of the responsibility of putting the welfare of the horses first and foremost, but no matter what anyone does, horses are going by their nature to get injured and die frequently; in the wild, on the farm and yes, at the racetrack.

There’s a race for her in early February we are pointing for
- Bullion runs Saturday at Oaklawn Park. An overflow 14 horse field but got a good post, excellent rider, and fits well in here.
- Night of Idiots fine out of her fast closing 3rd, beaten about 1&1/2 lengths for the win at Golden Gate Field.\s She’s sound and doing well and should be tough to beat next time, there’s a race for her Feb. 2nd to enter in.
- Solar good, there’s a race for him Feb. 7th to enter in at Gulfstream Park

- Shake It Up Baby recovering from a nasty intestinal virus that cropped up. Doing much better and should come home from the clinic in the next couple of days.
- Solar good out of his race at Gulfstream, there’s a similar spot for him in about 2 weeks.
- Rapstorerocks good out of his recent work, good spots for him in a couple of weeks
- New Found Treasure good out of her race. This filly has had a win and four thirds in eight starts for us and always tries hard. There are races for her and Giuliana Vee to enter in this week.
- No Good Deed is doing really well out of her debut race; in great flesh and feeling frisky with no issues at all. If she moves forward in her next start we should be ok here.
- Magic Musketier doing fine.
- Life on the Edge at the farm in Ocala and couldn’t look or be doing better. Will ship back into Kelly Breen next month at Palm Meadows.

Look for your invitation to our season kickoff event on January 31st this evening, where we will have information on upcoming groups and some exciting changes – upgrades to our program. Everyone attending in person will receive a discount on our next group
- No Good Deed made her career debut today at Gulfstream Park, broke slowly which put her well back early, made a nice run on the far turn to gain contention, then tired in deep stretch to finish 8th of 12 horses. She got a nice clean trip after the break, no excuses, not a great debut but actually not a horrible one either. These races at Gulfstream are always quite contentious and she should benefit from the experience. If she moves forward in her next start we should be ok.
- Night of Idiots fine out of her fast closing 3rd, beaten about 1&1/2 lengths for the win at Golden Gate Field. She’s sound and doing well and should be tough to beat next time
- Giuliana Vee had an easy maintenance work today at Penn National. Ready to run back anytime we find a race for her.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for January 16, 2020
good effort
Thanks again to everyone who joined the sold out Group #56, over-subscribed with a waiting list. Our first group of 2020! Shortly all owners will receive an invitation to our season kickoff event on January 31st where we will have information on upcoming groups and some exciting changes – upgrades to our program. Everyone attending in person will receive a discount on our next group.
- Night of Idiots was a fast closing 3rd, beaten about 1&1/2 lengths for the win today at Golden Gate Fields. She was surprisingly far back early and simply ran out of time in the stretch. She’s sound and doing well and should be tough to beat next time while picking up some decent purse $ today.
- No Good Deed makes her career debut tomorrow at Gulfstream Park. It’s an overflow 16 horse field, 12 will run with 4 also eligible at 5 furlongs on the turf. In turf sprints it’s all about the trip, whoever breaks good and doesn’t get shut off usually runs well. Fingers crossed.
- Shake It Up Baby “perfect” (trainer Kelly Breen) out of his race yesterday at Gulfstream Park. There’s a couple of good spots for him in about three weeks, ideal timing.
Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for January 15, 2020
Lots of good news, group #56 sold out
We are pleased to announce that Group #56 sold out in less than 1 week, over-subscribed with a waiting list. Thank you to everyone who joined our first group of 2020. Tomorrow all owners will receive an invitation to our season kickoff event on January 31st where we will have information on upcoming groups and some exciting changes – upgrades to our program. Everyone attending in person will receive a discount on our next group.
- Shake It Up Baby made his three year old debut today at Gulfstream Park and ran 4th in an excellent effort. Battled hard for the lead between horses and tired late, missing 3rd by a head and 2nd by less than 1 length. Afterwards the rider correctly said he wished he’d let the other two horses go early and stalked in 3rd instead of battling for the lead, and that was spot on. The winner drew away and was much the best but had he rated a little, we’d have easily been 2nd instead of a close 4th. All that said, he obviously needed the race after a 6 month layoff and should move forward off this. He showed speed from the get go and heart when challenged. Seemed to come back perfect, there’s a couple of good spots for him in about three weeks, ideal timing for his next start.
Just as a note on the ‘teachable moment’ we mentioned previously, the #4 and #10 horses trained by top trainer Todd Pletcher for top owner Starlight Racing that cost $240,000 and $200,000 respectively as yearlings finished 2nd and 3rd and neither one was claimed. 90% of the time even if you pay hundreds of thousands of dollars at a premier sale for a really well-bred good-looking individual you end up with a claiming horse. Top owners and trainers run them where they have a shot to compete, even if it’s for a fraction of what they paid. That’s why we don’t overpay at sales AND run horses where they belong, just as these smart and successful owners did here. We paid $40,000 for our horse, they paid a lot more for theirs, we ended up with the same level of horse.
- Night of Idiots runs tomorrow at Golden Gate Fields in a spot where she should be very competitive, even though it’s a tough group for the level. She worked again last Saturday and continues to be razor sharp.
- No Good Deed makes her career debut Friday at Gulfstream Park.
- Solar good out of his race at Gulfstream Park, there’s a similar spot for him in about 3 weeks.
- Rapstorerocks good out of his recent work.
- Giuliana Vee was entered at Penn National but the race didn’t go. Ready to run back anytime we find a race for her.
- Our beautiful 2yo out of Exchanging Fire for group #56 in training at T-Square stud in Ocala and doing super.
Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for January 12, 2020
Wow, 10 shares sold in Group #56 in the first couple days, thanks for the great response!
- Solar was 5th today at Gulfstream Park, beaten about 4 lengths for the win, exactly in the middle of the 9 horse field. He was dead last early, far back for most of the race, left with just too much to do. Made a nice move on the far turn to get into contention and pass four horses but too late. Seemed to come out of the race just fine.
A lot of entries to come this week as the action heats up!
- Shake It Up Baby makes his three year old debut Wednesday at Gulfstream Park. Obviously will need the race after a 6 month layoff but has trained very well for this. There are a couple of horses that look tough in here, but that’s always the case at Gulfstream at this time of year. If you want a ‘teachable moment’ note the #4 and #10 horses in his race; trained by top trainer Todd Pletcher for top owner Starlight Racing, they cost $240,000 and $200,000 respectively as yearlings. Both are making their debuts here, for $32,000 claiming. How can someone pay $240,000 for a horse, invest at least $75,000 more in training costs over the next two years, and offer it for sale for just $32,000 before it’s even had a shot to run a single race? These horses are working very slowly and obviously have demonstrated limited talent after months of training. At least 85% of the time (more like 90%+ actually), even if you pay hundreds of thousands of dollars at a premier sale for a really well-bred, good-looking individual, that’s what you get, a slow horse. Top owners and trainers run them where they have a shot to compete, even if it’s for a fraction of what they paid. Very tough for most owners to wrap their heads around how this business works, especially in terms of claiming, but like it or not this is reality. That’s why we don’t overpay at sales AND run horses where they belong, just as these smart and successful owners are doing here. Buying an unraced yearling or two year old is nothing like investing in stocks or bonds or real estate, it’s like trying to find a 14 year old high school kid who is going to make it to the NBA or NFL. Thousands will try and a few dozen will actually make it.
- Night of Idiots runs Thursday at Golden Gate in a spot where she should be very competitive, even though it’s a tough group for the level. She worked again Saturday (below) and continues to be razor sharp.
- No Good Deed was entered today at Gulfstream and the race went, she makes her career debut Friday. “I’d have liked to have another work but she’s doing well now, the race came up, it’s a good spot to get her started and go from there”, trainer Ron Spatz. It’s an overflow 16 horse field, 12 will run with 4 also eligible at 5 furlongs on the turf. In turf sprints it’s all about the trip, whoever breaks good and doesn’t get shut off usually runs well. Fingers crossed.
- Rapstorerocks worked this morning, a nice, easy 3/8 mile, went perfectly and scoped totally clean after the race, no mucus at all. Looks like the new course of antibiotics we gave him did the job. He’ll probably work one more time in 7-10 days and assuming all is well we can look for a race for him. Here’s the video of his work this morning the video shows how easily and strongly he went today…
- New Found Treasure good out of her race at Penn National. This filly has had a win and four thirds in eight starts for us and always tries hard. Will run back in a similar spot in a few weeks.
- Giuliana Vee was entered yesterday at Penn National but the race didn’t go. Ready to run back anytime we find a race for her. She’s gradually improving with each start and we are hoping to see her in the winner’s circle soon.

results, entries & More
Thanks to our Triple Crown members for the great response so far with Group #56, all co-owners will receive the details on our lowest priced group of the year tomorrow.
- New Found Treasure was an honest 3rd in a full and tough field for the level (she was 6 to1 here off her impressive win last time out) at Penn National. This filly has had a win and four thirds in eight starts for us and always tries hard.
A ton of entries ahead for this week as the action heats up and more to come, it will be an action-filled month to start off the new decade.
- Solar runs Sunday at Gulfstream Park. The usual large, competitive field but a repeat of his last great effort would make him the horse to beat in here
- Shake It Up Baby makes his three year old debut next Wednesday at Gulfstream Park with top rider Paco Lopez aboard. Obviously will need the race after a 6 month layoff but has trained very well for this. There are a couple of horses that look tough in here, but that’s always the case at Gulfstream at this time of year. If you want a ‘teachable moment’ about how this game really works, take a look at the #4 and #10 horses in his race (see attached DRF, 5th race). Both are trained by top trainer Todd Pletcher for top owner Starlight Racing. They cost $240,000 and $200,000 respectively as yearlings. Both are making their debuts here, for $32,000 claiming. Yes, totally understand how people find it hard to fathom how someone can pay $240,000 for a horse, invest at least $75,000 more in training costs over the next two years, and offer it for sale for just $32,000 before it’s even had a shot to run a single race. The horse doesn’t know what you paid for him, if they are slow and you run them over their heads in a non-claiming race you almost always end up the track, start the horse off on the wrong hoof, and it may never recover from that.
- Race for Night of Idiots finally went on the 5th try, she runs next Thursday at Golden Gate Fields in a spot where she should be very competitive, even though it’s a tough group for the level. ShFields e worked again this morning and continues to be razor sharp.
- Giuliana Vee doing well and will be entered tomorrow for next weekend at Penn. She’s gradually improving with each start and we are hoping to see her in the winner’s circle soon.
