Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for July 19, 2019

July 22, 2019 at 7:34 am • By Robb Levinsky
  • Annie’s Candy run a huge race at Sacramento this evening from last with a rush in the stretch to finish 2nd, beaten ¾ of a length for the win. A few steps after the wire he was in front, another fine effort for this super-consistent runner. Will run back at Santa Rosa in August and then back to Golden Gate where he has a truly incredible record.
  • Bullion had a nice easy breeze at Churchill Downs (below) after joining trainer Steve Asmussen’s string there. Steve reports he’s in good shape and he will be looking to get him in the entries shortly.
  • Exchanging Ember doing fine since retuning to training at Penn National last week, fingers crossed for a return to the races next month. Here is a  photo of her training at Penn National over the weekend (she’s the horse in front, not a great photo but you can see she’s training towards a start now).

  • Solar doing super, not a bad step or issue since claiming him at the end of last month. He’ll be entered this Wednesday for next weekend.  He’s ready and looks like he’s sitting on a big debut effort for us.
  • Our most recent addition to the Kenwood family, New Found Treasure is doing very well, claimed for Kenwood and group #54. With the Red Rocks (IRE) colt, now named Rapstorerocks in group #54 doing super, should be a lot of fun this summer
  • Life On the Edge doing well post-race, looking to breeze her in about 10 days and hopefully make her next start in August. She showed a ton of speed and talent, battling head to head for the lead in a fast pace for most of her debut. With the speed she showed she should be tough to beat with a race under her belt next time out.
  • Works below for Magic Musketier (should run in August at Del Mar), Starring John Wain (race for him July 31st at Del Mar), both doing excellent.
  • Lisa Limon fine at farm in Kentucky, in foal, will be sold in November or January. Her covering sire, Liam’s Map, just had his first winner today at Saratoga, breaking his maiden impressively in a $90,000 maiden special weight race.

Finally, so many of you have written about the debacle at the Haskell. We share your feelings and your frustrations. So do a lot of others, “Watchmaker: Heat wave leads to one strange Saturday

entry, Haskell, and more

  • The Haskell is still scheduled for tomorrow (Sat.) but with extreme heat cancelling racing up and down the east coast, check for any last minute announcements on the Monmouth Park website about changes-cancellations. Anyone who has a reserved seat-tickets with Kenwood kindly let us know if you have any change of plans. Looks like an absolutely great day of racing on tap.
  • Annie’s Candy runs Sunday at Sacramento, a short field, probably not his favorite surface but still looks tough in here.
  • ShimmyShimmy Shake well, looking for a race for her too at Monmouth Park, maybe Friday.
  • More Ice “100% sound, looks perfect” out of his race according to trainer Dan Ward. We are looking at an allowance event in August for his next start assuming all continues to go well. In fairness he’s also been in training for over a year without any time off so maybe he’d benefit from a little freshening too after that.

All others well, more to follow.

  • More Ice was 9th of 12 horses in the Oceanside Stakes opening day today at Del Mar. Obviously a big field and of course a tough group but he had no excuse as he was next to the favorite and eventual winner at the back of the pack for most of the race and simply didn’t fire the way the other horse did when asked for run.  He passed several horses late and was beaten 7 lengths for the win in a blanket finish, as the chart put it just “outkicked”. He’s a nice horse but just a cut below this level, plain & simple. In fairness he’s also been in training for over a year without any time off so maybe he’d benefit from a little freshening too.
  • Here’s a great video of our lovely Overanalyze filly (group #53) and newly named Rapstorerocks (Red Rocks (IRE) colt group #54) breezing together from the gate Monday morning at Monmouth. Both are doing really well, both look to be on track to make their debuts next month and just FYI, both groups are nearly sold out now (thank you!)

  • Solar doing super, not a bad step or issue since claiming him at the end of last month. We entered him for a race on Haskell Day that did not go, we are looking for a spot for him actively. He’s ready and looks like he’s sitting on a big debut effort for us.
  • Night of Idiots is back on the work tab at the Sacramento Fair (below), should be ready to run in a few weeks.
  • Vibrant Spirit fine (see recent work at Gulfstream below).
  • Giuliana Vee well at farm, expect her to be ready to return to training by the end of July or early August.
  • Start A Fire training well at Monmouth, heading towards his debut.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for July 13, 2019

July 13, 2019 at 8:40 pm • By Robb Levinsky
  • Shake It Up Baby plain failed to fire at any point in the race today at Monmouth PArk, finishing a dull 6th. Unlike Life On the Edge who showed a ton of speed and stopped with a big excuse, he showed nothing. Came into the race looking and doing absolutely great, showing a ton of speed and ability from the get go in all his works, so an obvious disappointment. Some horses need a race or two to show their best, one race is no reason to panic but that said, if he doesn’t run much better next time then we have cause for concern. Trainer Kelly Breen said after the race “this horse simply shows too much ability not to be a nice horse”, let’s hope he’s right.
  • Also today we welcomed New Found Treasure to the stable, claimed today at Monmouth Park for Kenwood and group #54. Didn’t run great but most important, came out of the race totally fine so far.  With the Red Rocks (IRE) colt in group #54 doing super, should be a lot of fun this summer
  • More Ice gets post #7 in a full 12 horse field in the Oceanside Stakes opening day, next Wednesday at Del Mar. While a big field and of course a tough group, he has two wins at Del Mar and has trained very well for this. As ready as we can get him!  All owners wishing to attend please let us know if you want assistance with admissions-seating.
  • MORNING TRAINING NEXT TUESDAY!  Please join us for morning training next Tuesday at Monmouth Park, your opportunity to see your horses train, take photos, meet your trainer and riders, etc. As of now (always subject to change!) several horses are scheduled to work including Start A Fire, Solar, and our two new two year olds, Red Rocks colt and Overanalyze filly. Others will gallop, all weather permitting. Please email us for meeting details if you’d like to attend, space limited!
  • Exchanging Ember returned to training and looks great, here’s a nice photo of her on the track this morning at Penn National

  • Our three two year olds in groups #53 & #54 Red Rocks (IRE) colt, Soldat filly, Overanalyze filly all well.  The Red Rocks colt and Overanalyze filly are making very rapid progress and are scheduled to work next Tuesday again at Monmouth. Real values here for our final groups of 2019! Here is a video of the Red Rocks (IRE) colt and Overanalyze filly working from the gate this morning.

update, morning training opportunity, please review!

  • Life On the Edge came out flying, battled for the lead, then stopped suddenly turning for home and the rider did not push her after that. We naturally were concerned, as anyone who saw the race would be, but it turned out she had “the thumps” when she returned to the barn, a very obvious reason for stopping and totally treatable. It’s generally a reaction to Lasix, not that uncommon the first time they get treated with it for a race. Usually it’s just a matter of less Lasix next time, it’s rarely a long-term issue. The horse can continue to train, no time off, and run back in a few weeks barring something unforeseen. To quote trainer Kelly Breen “Valedictorian (his multiple stakes winning filly) had it, it’s very manageable. I bet her (Life On the Edge), I was stunned when she stopped like that, but it’s very treatable”. She showed a ton of speed and talent, battling head to head for the lead in a fast pace for most of the race. With the speed she showed today she should be tough to beat with this resolved and a race under her belt next time out.
  • Tomorrow is the debut of Shake It Up Baby.  Been showing a ton of speed and ability from the get go, excellent final work July 1st. . There are a couple in here who have the advantage of a race under their belt, first start usually not a horse’s best, but that said he’s doing super and we are expecting him to run very well.
  • Exchanging Ember returned to active training today, jogged easily at Penn with no problems. She had some down time while remaining at Penn National with Mark Salvaggio, which seems to have done her a world of good (as time usually does with horses).
  • Bullion will be shipping to Kentucky shortly to join trainer Steve Asmussen’s string there.
  • Solar doing super, not a bad step or issue since claiming him at the end of last month. We are looking for a race for him now.
  • More Ice had a nice, easy work at Los Al (below) for his stake engagement opening day, July 17th at Del Mar. Will be entered tomorrow.  Doing super, won two big races as a two year old at Del Mar last year so we expect a big effort from him here.
  • Giuliana Vee well at farm, expect her to be ready to return to training by the end of July or early August.
  • Start A Fire training well at Monmouth, heading towards his debut, expected to breeze next Tuesday.
  • Our three two year olds in groups #53 & #54 Red Rocks colt, Soldat filly, Overanalyze filly all well.  The Red Rocks colt and Overanalyze filly are making very rapid progress and are scheduled to work next Tuesday again at Monmouth. Real values here for our final groups of 2019!

Another entry  at Monmouth Park, big weekend!

  • We’ll begin with the entry of Shake It Up Baby, who gets in Saturday at Monmouth Park for his debut. Been showing a ton of speed and ability from the get go, excellent final work July 1st. . There are a couple in here who have the advantage of a race under their belt, first start usually not a horse’s best, but that said he’s doing super and we are expecting him to run very well.
  • One day earlier Life On the Edge runs Friday at Monmouth in her career debut. She’s also been training well for this, excellent final work July 1st as well.  As stated above, 1st timers usually need a race or two to show their best but we are expecting her to show ability here and are excited to see her make the entries.
  • Our three two year olds in groups #53 & #54 Red Rocks colt, Soldat filly, Overanalyze filly all well.  We are down to the final few shares in our June groups; take a look at this video from trainer Kelly Breen on July 9th of the Overanalyze - Bold Kitten filly and the Red Rocks - Honey Green colt:

Next you can see them breaking from the gate at Monmouth July 4th here:

Kenwood Racing Notes for July 7, 2019

July 7, 2019 at 10:48 pm • By Robb Levinsky

Update on all your horses...

Good evening, here’s an update on all your horses with news, entries, works and more after a very busy week(end)…

  • We’ll begin with the entry of Life On the Edge, who is in Friday at Monmouth Park for her career debut. Been training very well for this, excellent final work July 1st (below). 1st timers usually need a race or two to show their best but we are expecting her to show ability here and are excited to see her make the entries. Here’s a video of her and Shake It Up Baby training together on July 4th  from Kelly Breen

Next we have two horses who were claimed from us at two different tracks:

  • Blue Eyed Beth ran hard and well today at Gulfstream Park, finishing 3rd against a tough group for this level in a race filled with early speed. She made the lead early; holding it until mid-stretch when passed by two favored horses, but still hung on gamely for 3rd money. She was claimed for us from the race for $16,000, we paid $15,000 plus tax for her last year at the OBS June sale so not a bad outcome here at all. She’s an honest filly, won for us and ran well in almost all her starts, but has real distance limitations and we think she was well sold.  This is the final horse for group #44, all three horses won, it was a fine group and all the co-owners can expect a statement and check in mid-August, once the final July bills have been received.
  • Federal Dominance was a closing 4th, beaten 1&3/4 lengths for the win at Monmouth Park Friday and also was claimed from us for the same price we paid for him about 6 weeks ago. He ran 3rd and 4th for us in two starts, earning about enough purse money to pay for his training costs. Not a bad horse, but didn’t run as well as we had expected in either start and based on that, it appears he too was well sold.

Updates on all the horses....

  • ShimmyShimmy Shake had no excuse at all when 6th Friday at Monmouth Park. Broke sharply, well placed just off a fast early pace while saving ground throughout, and tired badly. She’ll get one more try at Monmouth in a few weeks with a change in tactics, if that doesn’t work she’ll go to Penn National in search of a win against softer company.
  • In other news Solar doing super, not a bad step or issue since claiming him at the end of last month. We expect him to make his Kenwood debut by the end of July. Here’s a video of Solar training July 4th at Monmouth from Kelly Breen

  • Shake It Up Baby will be entered Wednesday for Saturday at Monmouth Park for his debut. Been showing a ton of speed and ability from the get go, excellent final work July 1st (below) hoping his race goes and expecting him to run very well.
  • More Ice excellent works June 29th and July 6th  (below), ready for his stake engagement opening day, July 17th at Del Mar. Doing super, won two big races as a two year old at Del Mar last year so we expect a big effort from him here.
  • Other California horses with works below include Seahawk Lisa, ready for her debut at Los Alamitos or Del Mar, Annie’s Candy, ready for a race in a couple of weeks at the California fairs, Starring John Wain, ready for a starter allowance race at Del Mar, and Magic Musketier, ready to run at Del Mar, probably in August.
  • Preacher doing well, should run this month at Del Mar or Ca. fairs.
  • Night of Idiots training well at Pleasanton
  • Rapid Red ready to come in from the farm shortly
  • Looking for a spot for Bullion.
  • Vibrant Spirit fine, should run at Gulfstream shortly. Final shot for her to show more or will be retired to a good home.
  • Giuliana Vee well at farm, expect her to be ready to return to training by the end of July or early August.
  • Start A Fire training well at Monmouth, heading towards his debut
  • Exchanging Ember has had some down time while remaining at Penn National with Mark Salvaggio.
  • Lisa Limon fine at farm in Kentucky, in foal, will be sold in November or January.
  • Our three two year olds in groups #53 & #54 Red Rocks colt, Soldat filly, Overanalyze filly all well.  We are down to the final few shares in our June groups; take a look at the attached video from trainer Kelly Breen this morning of the Overanalyze - Bold Kitten filly and the Red Rocks - Honey Green colt galloping out from their first timed works at Monmouth Park July 1st (the Soldat filly is in Florida). They went together in 37.0 flat, going easily. Next you can see them breaking from the gate at Monmouth July 4th here;:

These two horses are making very rapid progress, on track to make their career debuts this summer at Monmouth. Real values here for our final groups of 2019!

We’ll close with congratulations to our trainer Kelly Breen, who won three races today including the feature New Jersey bred stake, “Recent Claim Heading Home Captures Jersey Girl Handicap” Kelly is having another outstanding meet, 2nd leading trainer by number of wins, #1 by winning percentage. Take a look at the article at the bottom of the works below, folks your horses are in the best of hands!

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for July 4, 2019

July 5, 2019 at 5:44 am • By Robb Levinsky

works, entries

  • Blue Eyed Beth runs Sunday at Gulfstream, doing well, right level, got one of the toughest races for this level seen in a very very long time.
  • Two for Monmouth Park tomorrow as Federal Dominance and ShimmyShimmy Shake both get in good spots. A large crowd will be on hand.
  • Shake It Up Baby and Life On the Edge both ready for their debuts at Monmouth July 12,13th (remember, these are possible ENTRIES, NOBODY knows if these races will go until entry day 2-3 days in advance).
  • We have one group left to claim a horse for this meet, our newest group #54, to go with the really good looking Red Rocks colt we purchased at OBS June. That group is selling quickly, just $4,900 a share.
  • Solar training very well at Monmouth Park. A lot to like here, much as with the claim of Federal Dominance last month a horse with real potential. Should make his Kenwood debut in July at Monmouth.
  • Exchanging Ember is well and going back into training next week at Penn National after a brief bit of down time at the track last month. Hoping she’ll be back in the entries next month.

All others well at farms and tracks from coast to coast. More to follow soon

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for July 1, 2019

Results, works, entries

  • Two 4th place finishes yesterday in California. First, Annie’s Candy was the victim of a poor ride at Pleasanton as he was sent to the lead on a deep rail (against his off the pace running style) and tired late after battling the entire race to finish 4th, beaten just over 2 lengths for the win. A better ride and trip and he gets the win in a similar spot.
  • Then, at Los Alamitos, Preacher broke a step slow (but much better than when totally left at the gate in his debut last time), then rocketed to the lead and kept it until the stretch before tiring noticeably late to finish 4th. He was facing two exceptionally good horses (the winner was purchased for $550,000 and was working spectacularly for this, probably will be in graded stake at Del Mar next), and showed excellent speed and a nice step forward from his debut. A little softer level and he should be very tough to beat next time.
  • Two big entries to report for Monmouth Park this Friday as Federal Dominance and ShimmyShimmy Shake both get in good spots. Please let us know if you plan to attend and need help with seating – admissions for what should be a very exciting day, ALL owners welcome!
  • Shake It Up Baby and Life On the Edge both worked this morning at Monmouth and went very fast and very well in their final tune ups for their career debuts. There are races for them at Monmouth July 12,13th (remember, these are possible ENTRIES! NOBODY knows if these races will go until entry day 2-3 days in advance). Our entries page has all entry info.

  • As we come down to the final few shares in our June groups, take a look at the video links on Vimeo trainer Kelly Breen took this morning of the Overanalyze - Bold Kitten filly and the Red Rocks (IRE) - Honey Green colt galloping out from their first timed works at Monmouth Park this morning. They went together in 37.0 flat, going easily and still in the top half of all works time wise. These two horses are making very rapid progress, already went to the gate this weekend and nicely on track to make their career debuts this summer at Monmouth.

  • Magic Musketier and Seahawk Lisa both had good works yesterday in California (below).
  • All others well at farms and tracks from coast to coast.

Thanks to all who attended an excellent annual meeting yesterday, plenty of good questions and good info.
