Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for May 22, 2019

May 22, 2019 at 8:01 pm • By Robb Levinsky

Last call for our next morning training session, this Thursday, May 23rd at Monmouth Park. We expect all horses to train and all two year olds to have timed works (always subject to last minute change due to weather, etc.). Jack Czajkowski will be your host for this event, so please email Jack@kenwoodracing.com to sign up and he’ll give you all meeting time & information. As always, space is limited, first come, first served! It’s a nice opportunity to see your horses train, talk with your trainer, and fill your arteries at the track kitchen! Anyone who cannot attend Thursday and wants to see them train (not breeze, just gallop) on Friday or Saturday feel free to email Rob@Kenwoodracing.com.

Now a horse by horse rundown, including this week’s works:

  • More Ice: super work today, doing absolutely great, right on target for $150,000 Cinema Stakes June 2nd at Santa Anita “we’re ready!”, Jerry Hollendorfer.
  • Bullion:  good out of work, will work again this week and hopefully be ready to run off of that.
  • Preacher:  Super work today “He’s almost ready to run, been outworking some very expensive horses I’ve worked him with”, Jerry Hollendorfer. May be the first of our 2019 two year olds to debut. They don’t all run like they work but if he does he’ll be a real bargain purchase.
  • Seahawk Lisa:  “She’s fine, too early to tell you a lot in terms of ability but doing everything right so far”, Jerry Hollendorfer
  • Starring John Wain:  Good out of another fine effort last week, might come back June 2nd on short rest against California-breds if the race goes at Golden Gate Fields
  • Annie’s Candy:  Good out of impressive win last week, will run at Golden Gate Fields in June
  • Night of Idiots, Rapid Red:  Both ready to come in from farm in 2-3 weeks.
  • Magic Musketier: Ready to return from very brief freshening at farm, back at Santa Anita first week of June.
  • Vibrant Spirit: Excellent work today at Gulfstream Park. There’s a great spot for her June 8th if it goes, maybe one more work before that and run.
  • Blue Eyed Beth:  Good out of her last, looking at a dirt race June 22nd at Gulfstream Park, if nothing else suitable comes up sooner.
  • Exchanging Ember: Looking at something in later June for her next start.
  • Life On the Edge, Giuliana Vee, Shake It Up Baby, all doing excellent at Monmouth Park, scheduled to breeze again this Thursday. Any-all could run within 45-60 days if everything goes exactly as planned. That rarely happens, but if we are lucky one or two of them could make their debuts around July 4th week.
  • Shimmyshimmy Shake:  good out of her race last weekend off the claim. We expect to see her in the entries for her Kenwood debut next month
  • Start A Fire: Ready to ship to Monmouth, looking for a van for him from Ocala next week. “He may be one of the biggest horses you’ve ever had, the extra time has really helped, he keeps moving forward”, Adam Parker

Blog, morning training, new horses, and more

  • A lot of news but we’ll begin with another interesting Blog, “It doesn't pay to overpay for horses, no matter how promising they appear”. Take a look.
  • You are invited to our next morning training session, this Thursday, May 23rd at Monmouth Park. We expect all horses to train and all two year olds to have timed works (always subject to last minute change due to weather, etc.). Jack Czajkowski will be your host for this event, so please email Jack@kenwoodracing.com to sign up and he’ll give you all meeting time & information. • Speaking of training, here’s two 7 second videos of Life On the Edge and Giuliana Vee coming out of the gate this morning at Monmouth. A lot of training is not the timed works, it’s the day to day education of a young horse just getting accustomed to the surroundings and gaining confidence, like you see here:

A lot of exciting news, but we’ll begin with another interesting Blog, take a look.

Another successful week(end) ended on an exciting note, with two good efforts and two claims, here’s all the news…

  • Diamond Play, making her 2019 debut at Monmouth Park in race 8, a large and competitive field, ran just the race we’d expected today as she closed stoutly to finish 5th, beaten about 3 lengths for the win. She was claimed from us for $30,000, something we didn’t expect but weren’t totally shocked by either. We like the filly and would have been happy to keep her, but we also felt going in that if by chance someone wanted to pay us $30,000 for a filly we paid $12,500 for last summer and had earned about $40,000 in purse money for us to date we certainly wouldn’t complain, and we’re not. She’s a really gritty, hard trying filly and off this effort is capable of winning races this summer at Monmouth. For us the bottom line is we paid $12,500 and just received $30,000 after earning far more purse income than her expenses. A hearty congratulations to all the owners of this very successful and profitable group!
  • We lost one via claim and added one right back a few races later, as we claimed the light raced three-year-old filly Shimmyshimmy Shake from the 12th race at Monmouth Park for group #47 (Start A Fire) for $12,500. Lots more to come on the claim front and so far so good with this one, seems to be walking totally sound after the race.
  • Next up Starring John Wain was a very game 3rd, beaten just 1 & ½ lengths for the win in race 5 at Golden Gate, despite running against open company as a Ca. bred. The race was taken off the turf and he once again ran hard and well on the GGF dirt track, battling hard in the stretch to just get up for 3rd while also just missing 2nd money in a 4 horse photo from 2nd-5th.  This was his amazing 8th race in a row finishing 2nd or 3rd, hard to find a more honest and consistent runner anywhere.
  • Annie’s Candy was the highlight of the week with an impressive win in race 4 at Golden Gate Fields on Thursday.  He got a great setup and mowed the field down in the stretch to win going away in the fast time of 109:91. Kenwood partner Helen Hansel was on hand to welcome Annie’s Candy into the winner’s circle and kick off another big weekend for us on a very good note indeed.
  • Two races didn’t end up with as good as we hoped Saturday as Blue Eyed Beth sat just off the pace of two dueling leaders early, made a bold move in the stretch, than flattened out just a bit right at the wire to finish 5th while beaten just 1&3/4 lengths for the win in race 4 at Gulfstream Park. This filly always tries hard, but off this it appears she’s just not quite as quick on turf as she is on the dirt, so we’ll run her back on the dirt going forward. Exchanging Ember was the 2nd choice in race 2  at Penn National and sat a nice trip just off the pace also but failed to gain ground when asked, finishing 4th
  • Taima The Hawk, Life On the Edge, Giuliana Vee, Shake It Up Baby, Bullion, Vibrant Spirit and More Ice all good out of recent works

So for the week we had a win and a 3rd from 5 starts, plus a very profitable payday with the claim of Diamond Play.

Stay tuned for an announcement of another morning training session next week.

A lot of exciting news but we’ll begin with an important Blog, take a look…

  • Two big races today didn’t end up with as good a results as yesterday: Blue Eyed Beth sat just off the pace of two dueling leaders early, made a bold move in the stretch, than flattened out just a bit right at the wire to finish 5th while beaten just 1&3/4 lengths for the win in race 4 at Gulfstream Park. This filly always tries hard, but off this it appears she’s just not quite as quick on turf as she is on the dirt, so we’ll run her back on the dirt going forward.
  • This evening, Exchanging Ember was the 2nd choice in race 2  at Penn National and sat a nice trip just off the pace also but failed to gain ground when asked, finishing 4th.
  • Annie’s Candy good out of his impressive win yesterday in race 4 at Golden Gate Fields.  He got a great setup and mowed the field down in the stretch to win going away in the fast time of 109:91. Kenwood partner Helen Hansel was on hand to welcome Annie’s Candy into the winner’s circle and kick off another big weekend for us on a very good note.
  • Tomorrow, Diamond Play makes her 2019 debut at Monmouth Park on Saturday in race 8. It’s a huge 11 horse field, a super tough open allowance, and without question she’ll need the race after the layoff. Been training well and this will be a good starting point for what we hope will be a very successful season for her against New Jersey breds in future Monmouth starts.
  • Also tomorrow, Starring John Wain makes his career debut on turf in race 5 on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields. There’s one shipper from Southern California who will be the overwhelming favorite, he fits with all the others if he can handle the new surface.
  • Taima The Hawk worked absolutely super this morning at Golden Gate (below)
  • Life On the Edge, Giuliana Vee and Shake It Up Baby all good out of their first timed works yesterday at Monmouth Park.
  • Bullion, Vibrant Spirit, More Ice and Starring John Wain all good out of recent works (below).

Big win for Annie's Candy, two year olds work, and more...

  • Annie’s Candy got a great setup and moved the field down in the stretch to win going away today in Race 4 at Golden Gate Fields in the fast time of 109:91. It was a super impressive effort when returned to his favorite track and dropped into a spot where he towered over the field class wise. He was not claimed and we’re glad that was the case off this performance but claim or no, the goal with all horses is to win races by keeping yourself in the best company and your horses in the worst company and we did exactly that here. Kenwood partner Helen Hansel was on hand to welcome Annie’s Candy into the winner’s circle and kick off another big weekend for us on a very good note indeed.

  • Life On the Edge, Giuliana Vee and Shake It Up Baby all had their first timed works at Monmouth this morning (below). Most people have heard this 100 times from us by now but since we do have a lot of new co-owners, the time means virtually nothing, especially at this stage. Almost any horse can be made to work a ‘fast’ time, all work times are a lot slower than the time even a slow horse runs in most races.

Life on the Edge (on the rail)

Shake It Up Baby (outside) and Guiliana Vee (on the rail)

  • Two big entries tomorrow: Blue Eyed Beth is the morning line favorite at Gulfstream Park in race 4 on Friday and Exchanging Ember is the 2nd choice in race 2 at Penn National on Friday. The horse doesn’t care about the odds and neither do we, except that it shows they are well placed and IF they get a good trip and IF they run their best races they would be very competitive in these spots.
  • Diamond Play makes her 2019 debut at Monmouth Park on Saturday in race 8. It’s a huge 11 horse field, a super tough open allowance, and without question she’ll need the race after the layoff. Been training well and this will be a good starting point for what we hope will be a very successful season for her against New Jersey breds in future Monmouth starts.
  • Starring John Wain makes his career debut on turf in race 5 on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields. There’s one shipper from Southern California who will be the overwhelming favorite, he fits with all the others if he can handle the new surface..
  • Nice work for Bullion, as he points for his next start off his outstanding maiden win. Here’s a link to Bullion’s work, he looks just magnificent, does everything like a good horse
  • Also works Monday (below) Vibrant Spirit, More Ice and Starring John Wain on Sunday.
  • More Ice right on track for the $150,000 Cinema Stakes in June and Starring John Wain runs this weekend as above.

All others well from coast to coast.

Big entries, lots of works and more...

Blue Eyed Beth is the morning line favorite at Gulfstream Park in race 4 on Friday and Exchanging Ember is the 2nd choice in race 2 at Penn National on Friday. The horse doesn’t care about the odds and neither do we, except that it shows they are well placed and IF they get a good trip and IF they run their best races they would be very competitive in these spots. That gives us five horses running at four different tracks this week(end), another huge racing week. We had five starters at multiple tracks three weeks ago and it was a big success, with 2 wins, a 2nd and a 3rd. We are cautiously optimistic this will be another successful weekend.
  • Nice work for Bullion, as he points for his next start off his outstanding maiden win. You can view his work here.
  • Also works Monday (below) for Vibrant Spirit (“I like the way she’s going now, should be ready to enter with maybe one more work”) Ron Spatz and More Ice and Starring John Wain Sunday. More Ice right on track for the $150,000 Cinema Stakes in June and Starring John Wain runs this weekend as above.

All others well from coast to coast.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for May 12, 2019

Another entry, more to come…

Red Shelby ran poorly Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. Heavily favored after a big drop in class she broke slow, rushed to make the lead, and simply stopped in the stretch to finish 5th and last. There were multiple claims in for her, as expected.

A big week ahead with three entries all set and more to come. Could be as many as 5 horses running from Thursday – Sunday at four different tracks…

  • Exchanging Ember gets in the spot we wanted, long against fillies on Friday, Race 2 at Penn National. Right level for another good effort from her and we are eager to see her run.
  • Annie’s Candy gets in the right spot at Golden Gate Fields, race 4 on Thursday, May 16th
  • Another entry as Blue Eyed Beth run race 4 at Gulfstream Park on Friday. A slightly softer field off a good second last time out should make her tough to beat with a good trip.
  • Diamond Play on schedule for her season debut May 18th, enter Wednesday. Hoping it goes at Monmouth for a very nice purse.
  • Race did not go for Starring John Wain, but he worked really well today at Golden Gate (below) and the race is back up for next weekend on the grass so hopefully it will go this time. The way he’s training, if he handles the grass (first time trying turf) and gets a decent trip he should run really well.
  • More Ice on track for his next stakes engagement June 2nd at Santa Anita, $150,000 purse and he’ll be ready. Worked well this morning (below) on the training track at Santa Anita.
  • Seahawk Lisa is in training at Los Alamitos with assistant trainer Don Chatlos (who prepares most of Jerry’s two year olds). We purchased her last year as a yearling and were very pleased with her progress in Ocala this winter. Looking forward to her debut this summer in California.

As usual, you can see up to date possible entries here.  Please note this is where you go to find out things like “what race, what time” etc. You can also find that information on Equibase

All six groups offered so far in 2019 have been completely sold out. Thanks to everyone for their support of our program including a record 18 new co-owners in 2019 so far!

Here are a couple of great photos of Start A Fire (group #47) this morning from Adam Parker. Adam explains, “......in a photo!  By the slimmest of margins, Start a Fire, fully extended, nips his workmate at the wire. This was an open gallop this morning.” The horse is doing excellent, ready to come up to Monmouth Park in 2-3 weeks from now.

Photos courtesy of Adam Parker.

Giuliana Vee (group #51), Life On the Edge (group #50), and Shake It Up Baby (group #49) all came out of the gate together at Monmouth Park this morning (see video below). Not the best video quality but trainer Kelly Breen (who took the video) explains “There’s a 4th horse not yours that came out with them (far outside). They all should have just been walking out. They were being asked too much for their 2nd time in the gate but they all handled it. All doing well”.  Look for a timed work for all three shortly.

Entry and horse news….

  • Exchanging Ember gets in the spot we wanted, long against fillies next week at Penn National May 17th. Right level for another good effort from her and we are eager to see her run.
  • Annie’s Candy gets in the right spot at Golden Gate Fields, race 4 on Thursday, May 16th.
  • Red Shelby runs Sunday in race 5 at Golden Gate Fields. Takes a nice drop in class, smaller field, good spot. Looking for a much-improved effort here.
  • Blue Eyed Beth will be entered for a race at Gulfstream this week, if that doesn’t go there’s another spot for her in about 10 days. Doing really well.
  • Diamond Play on schedule for her season debut May 18th, enter Wed. Hoping it goes at Monmouth for a very nice purse.
  • More Ice on track for his next stakes engagement June 2nd at Santa Anita, $150,000 purse and he’ll be ready
  • Starring John Wain and possibly Run Macho Run will be entered for races this week at Golden Gate also. Both doing well.
  • Seahawk Lisa arrived safely in California and is in training at Los Alamitos with assistant trainer Don Chatlos (who prepares most of Jerry’s two year olds). We purchased her last year as a yearling and were very pleased with her progress in Ocala this winter. Looking forward to her debut this summer in California.

As usual, you can see up to date possible entries here.  Please note this is where you go to find out things like “what race, what time” etc. You can also find that information on Equibase

As previously announced, both groups #49 (Shake It Up Baby) & #50 (Life on the Edge) are now sold out. All remaining shares in group #49 were sold in just four days after the announcement at the Monmouth Park season kickoff party last Friday and the final share in our landmark group #50 was snapped up yesterday. All six groups offered so far in 2019 have been completely sold out! Thanks to everyone for their support of our program, including a record 18 new co-owners in 2019 so far!

Lisa Limon doing well and in foal in Kentucky to red hot sire Liam’s Map.

Entry and horse news….

  • Guiliana Vee (group #51), Life on the Edge (group #50), and Shake It Up Baby (group #49), all galloping strongly and making excellent progress towards their debuts at Monmouth Park. Will breeze (their first timed works) next week or this weekend
  • Start A Fire (group #47) will ship from Ocala to Kelly Breen at Monmouth Park in about three weeks. At that point all our two year olds will be at the track, training for their career debuts.
  • A very nice work at Golden Gate for Taima The Hawk (below). Hoping to have him back in the entries shortly.
