Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for June 29, 2019
Exciting new horse for group 51, entries, races, more
- We begin the big holiday week(end) with an exciting new horse for Kenwood Racing & Group #51 (Giuliana Vee) yesterday with the claim of the lightly raced three year old Solar at Monmouth Park for $20,000. We have mentioned many times it’s less important how they run than how they come back with claims; in this case we got both, as he won easily and impressively, going away by 4&3/4 lengths “under wraps” (see chart). He looked absolutely great this morning. Hard to find young sound horses like this with upside potential. A lot to like here, much as with the claim of Federal Dominance last month a horse with real potential. Solar should make his Kenwood debut in July at Monmouth.
- We have one group left to claim a horse for this meet, our newest group #54, to go with the really good looking Red Rocks (IRE) colt we purchased at OBS June. That group is selling quickly, just $4,900 a share.
- In other news, we have two horses running in California tomorrow, Annie’s Candy in race 2 at Pleasanton in a good spot as the morning line favorite, and Preacher in race 5 at Los Alamitos, facing some very well bred expensive 2yos but training great for this.
- A ton of training at Monmouth Park this morning and all went really well. See videos for Start A Fire, Shake It Up Baby, Life On the Edge, (Overanalyze filly and Red Rocks colt – new groups 53 &54), ShimmyShimmy Shake and Federal Dominance on our Vimeo page (Videos also below)
- Tomorrow we enter ShimmyShimmy Shake and Federal Dominance for races July 5th at Monmouth Park. Both are doing excellent, hope their races go.
- All others well at farms and tracks from coast to coast.
Remember our annual meeting is 10 AM tomorrow, plenty of parking available 3 blocks away in AP garage, not full on a Sunday morning, easy. This is your chance to review financial info. on all groups and ask questions on your horses, we look forward to seeing you!
Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for June 27, 2019
2 new entries, videos, annual meeting, update on all horses
Reminder, our annual meeting is this Sunday! For those of you used to attending our annual meeting around Haskell weekend, this is the annual meeting that we normally have at that time. As a note for our many new Co-Owners, this is your chance to review financial information, ask questions about the business, the groups you are in and horses that you have. As this is a business meeting, we ask please owners only, no guests! RSVP really helps but all owners are welcome even at the last minute.
- Today in race 5 at Gulfstream Park, Vibrant Spirit sat a good trip just off the early speed, made a move into 2nd turning for home, and faded badly in the stretch to finish 8th. No real excuse, expected her to run better in her 2nd start off the layoff, we’ll see if anything shows up in the next few days and go from there.
- On Sunday, we hav two big California entries for Preacher in race 5 at Los Alamitos and Annie’s Candy in race 2 at Pleasanton. Both doing well, both coming off good efforts, hoping to add to recent California big win for Starring John Wain (who came out of his race perfect).
- There are races to enter in for Federal Dominance on July 4th and ShimmyShimmy Shake on July 5th at Monmouth Park, both ready, hope races go.
- Also races next week for Bullion and the debut of Seahawk Lisa at Los Alamitos.
- Looking for spots now for Blue Eyed Beth, Life On the Edge and Shake It Up Baby, all ready to run also. Right now next 2 year old maiden races are not until mid-July but if anything comes up sooner they’ll be in it.
- Start A Fire training well.
- More Ice on track for opening day stake at Del Mar
- Giuliana Vee fine at farm, back in training soon,
- Night of Idiots and Magic Musketier both training well,
- Rapid Red comes in from the farm soon.
- Exchanging Ember well at Penn, just walking a couple more weeks then hopefully back into full training.
Here are videos to Federal Dominance and Shake It Up Baby training this morning at Monmouth. Start A Fire also galloped, we’ll have a video of him in the next day or two.
Also a nice video from our other two new purchases training together at Monmouth Park earlier this week, the Overanalyze filly and the Red Rocks colt, take a look….
Space in our FINAL two year old partnership groups of 2019 are almost full. Please let us know if you are interested in one of the remaining shares in one of these great groups.
Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for June 23, 2019
BIG win, update on all horses, entries
A big win this evening as Starring John Wain wins a maiden special weight race against open company impressively at Pleasanton (with a nice Ca. bred bonus), coming from far back in the early going in a 10 horse field to win going away in the stretch. This super honest colt had been in money 9 of last 10 starts (a troubled 4th in the other) and was long overdue for a win. Been a lot of fun and a money-maker for us. A big congratulations to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and his entire team. Jerry has endured a lot of sniping and media mis-information in the last few days and we’re especially happy to see him get the win for us.
Now a horse by horse update….
- Life On the Edge now ready for her debut. She trained great today, see video “She’s a bit ahead of the two fillies she worked with and all of them are about ready to run. I actually entered her this weekend and they had one horse entered, her. She’s ready to run in the next maiden special weight filly race that goes at Monmouth”, Kelly Breen.
- Same story for Shake It Up Baby, also trained well today and ready to run in the first maiden special weight colt race that goes at Monmouth
- Federal Dominance excellent out of his debut, a fast closing 3rd. There’s a good spot for him at Monmouth July 4th weekend.
- Magic Musketier training well, should run in July
- Annie’s Candy good and looking for spot at Pleasanton
- Night of Idiots training well since returning from the farm
- Rapid Red returns from the farm around July 1st
- Giuliana Vee fine at farm and should return to training in late July. A quick visit to see Giuliana Vee Saturday morning at the farm, enjoy the photos!
- Exchanging Ember getting time off but at track just walking, not farm. Hoping to have her back in full training in about 4 weeks.
- Start A Fire pulled something in a foot and missed a few days of training, seems ok now and goes back to the track tomorrow
- ShimmyShimmy Shake worked this morning (below) and doing well, looking for a spot for her, ready to run
- Bullion doing well, looking at July 6th at Los Alamitos for his next start. Had a nice work yesterday (below)
- Vibrant Spirit runs Thursday at Gulfstream Park, nice little maintenance work yesterday (below). Expecting a big step forward after a race under her belt.
- Seahawk Lisa worked 2 days ago and may run at Los Alamitos.
- Blue Eyed Beth was entered for Friday at Gulfstream Park but race did not go, looking for other options for her now.
- Preacher scheduled to run at Los Alamitos next week, doing great.
- More Ice on schedule for the opening day stake at Del Mar in July.
Very excited about our three new horses from OBS June sale, here’s a video of the Red Rocks colt and Overanalyze filly training together today at Monmouth….
Space in our FINAL two year old partnership groups of 2019 are filling up rapidly. Please let us know if you are interested in one of the remaining shares in one of these great groups..
Our next morning training session will be at Monmouth Park this Saturday, please RSVP if you wish to attend and we will send you information on meeting time. Space limited, reserve now.
Also remember our annual meeting is this Sunday, your chance to review financial information and ask questions in a wonderful informal setting with food & drink (thanks to partner Ellen Gaynor).

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for June 15, 2019
Good debut, works...
- A fine Kenwood debut for Federal Dominance in race 12 at Monmouth Park. He closed strongly in the stretch to finish a close 3rd, beaten a neck for 2nd and just over a length for the win while moving up in class. Looks like a nice claim and off this race appears to be a very honest, competitive horse. Here’s a video of him in the paddock today before the race and photos.
- Life On the Edge trained very well today at Monmouth Park.
- Tune up work for Bullion, he’s ready to enter for his race on the 21st, sure hope it goes
- Seahawk Lisa good out of her workout at Los Alamitos, there are races for her there end of June and early July, she should debut in one of them.

Final buy for final sale day, 2 great groups coming, plus another work
The final day of OBS was the strongest yet, we got the one horse we wanted the most and outbid on two others. Came up with another great filly, Hip #725, a Florida bred by Soldat who worked in a super fast 10.0 and galloped out (much like Hip #113) in a super fast 20.4. Of particular note here is the amazing female family she comes out of. Her incredible dam has 12 foals to race, and EVERY ONE is a winner, including a stakes winner and a Grade 1 stakes placed horse. Almost impossible to believe.
We’re going to package the two fillies, Hip #113 and Hip #725, into one group, and the colt, Hip #393 and funds for a claiming pool into a second group. Details to follow shortly!
See below for work update, nice new work for Seahawk Lisa.

Another nice OBS buy on Day Two...
The second day of OBS June was stronger than the first day, we got outbid on a couple but got one more of the ones we really wanted with Hip #393, just look at the photo of this super handsome colt, speaks for itself. Purchased from one of the best, most reputable consignors, Niall Brennan, for a value priced $23,000 after outbidding several people.
OBS June sale began with a bang for us on Wednesday with the purchase of a very impressive filly at a great price on day one. Hip #113, by Overanalyze (a promising young sire who just had his first grade 1 stakes winner on Belmont Day) - out of the stakes winning young Kitten’s Joy mare Bold Kitten was purchased for $40,000.
We have 4 horses on our list for Friday, the final sale day, with luck we’ll have one or two more and be able to offer two groups from OBS June. We have a lot of demand for these groups but unlike other syndicates who always have some marked-up product to sell on commission, we only buy what we are willing to invest our own money in, at a price we are willing to pay our own money for. Stay tuned for announcements on upcoming group offerings!
Thanks for your support!
Entry news:
- Federal Dominance training well at Monmouth Park and makes his Kenwood debut Saturday in the 12th race. Please let George know if you plan to attend and wish help with admissions-seating.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for June 12, 2019
The OBS June sale begins with a bang for us with the purchase of a very impressive filly at a great price. Hip #113, by Overanalyze (a promising young sire who just had his first grade 1 stakes winner on Belmont Day) - out of the stakes winning young Kitten’s Joy mare Bold Kitten was purchased for $40,000. Besides the nice pedigree and the fact that she’s a really impressive physical individual, this purchase offers a great ‘teachable moment’ in how-when a fast workout time really matters. She worked in 10.1, one of the better works of the sale, but what made it so impressive was the gallop out time, 20.4 for 2 furlongs and 33.2 for 3 furlongs. Look at stakes races and you’ll see few horses run 3 furlongs anywhere near that fast.
The ‘teachable moment’ is that this is information few people at the sale have. All the sales company reports is the official 1/8 mile work time, 10.1. To know the gallop out times you need to employ a private clocker to sit on a bench for 4 days with a stop watch and accurately record gallop out times and makes notes on how they pull up. It costs a lot of money and takes a lot of work. We do it, many other professionals do also, but the majority of buyers don’t bother, most don’t even know it matters.
So think about 2 works at a sale, both listed as 10.1, a ‘fast’ time. One horse gallops out in 21.0 and 34.0, the other gallops out in 22.0 and 35.0. Which one worked better? NO guarantees, it’s one work, if you want a guarantee buy US government bonds, not racehorses! But which would you rather pay for at the sale, all things being equal?
This filly galloped out exceptionally fast, meaning AFTER the rider stood up on her at the end of her timed 1 furlong work, she kept going incredibly quickly on her own, a display of natural ability that’s exactly what you want in a racehorse. Again, no guarantees, maybe she can’t go 6 furlongs, maybe she gets hurt, or 100 other things, but it’s a very positive piece of the puzzle only a few people had. That’s exactly how people get bargains at sales.
This was a great sale for bargain hunters, sparsely attended, sales average down 12% from last year and RNA”s (not sold) up a stunning 60% (from 17.9% to 28.9%). From OBS website, "For the session, 187 horses grossed $6,119,500, compared with 179 selling for a total of $6,641,100 at last year’s first session. The average was $32,725 compared with $37,101 a year ago, while the median price was $20,000, up from $18,000 in 2018. The buyback percentage was 28.9%; it was 17.9.% last year."
We took advantage of the weak sale and our good research to buy a very nice horse at a very attractive price and if the trend holds we hope to add 2 or 3 more to our roster by the end of the sale Friday. Stay tuned for announcements on upcoming group offerings.
