Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for August 28, 2019
Big win for Ember, another entry, lots of great news
Wonderful to see the 110+ people who joined us at the 2nd annual Kenwood Racing picnic last Sunday at Monmouth Park on a perfect weather day, highlighted by the NJ Thoroughbred Festival and tee shirt giveaway. A special thanks to George Katzenberger, our owner services manager for organizing this great event and to Kenwood partner Ellen Gaynor and everyone else who assisted George in making this event a huge success. We couldn’t do it without you!
A lot of exciting racing news….
- Exchanging Ember was in a perfect spot at Penn National this evening. Ember got a perfect trip sitting close up behind two dueling speed horses and made the most of it, taking over in deep stretch to win by a hard fought 2 lengths in race 3. It was a picture perfect ride by her regular rider, Andrew Wolfsant, and truly a masterful training job by Mark Salvaggio!.
- Next up Magic Musketier gets in a nice spot for his return to the races after a summer freshening tomorrow at Del Mar. He has worked absolutely great for his return.
- Then New Found Treasure gets in the entries at Monmouth Park on Saturday in a nice spot, hoping to end the month with another big effort here. Anyone wishing help with seating – admissions, kindly contact George@kenwoodracing.com
- Solar’s race did NOT go Wednesday for Saturday at Monmouth Park but has been brought back, enter tomorrow for Sunday. The horse is doing absolutely super and just needs somewhere to run, here’s a video of him training this week
Remember, all entries for possible upcoming races are here: https://www.kenwoodracing.com/statistics/entries
- Starring John Wain had an excellent work Sunday (below), he’s doing well and ready to run.
- ShimmyShimmy Shake good. There’s a race for her on September 8th we are pointing for at Monmouth Park and then we’ll send her to Penn for the fall.
- Smarty Cat good out of her fine debut; looking at one of two races for her in September.
- Life On the Edge, Start A Fire, Giuliana Vee and Rapstorerocks all good at Monmouth Park
- Annie’s Candy and Night Of Idiots all doing well in California
- No Good Deed, Shake It Up Baby and Bullion all fine on the farm. All three horses should get back to the track in September (maybe a little later for Shake It Up Baby than the other two).
- Lisa Limon fine at farm in Kentucky. She’s in foal to Liam’s Map who had a huge debut winner at Saratoga last weekend. She is entered in the Keeneland November sale in Kentucky and we are excited to see her sell there.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for August 24, 2019
Entries, results, and works
- A very enjoyable day for a sold-out and enthusiastic ‘Be a Racehorse Owner for a Day’ group at Monmouth Park. A great group of people enjoyed morning training and an afternoon of racing with us from a private parterre suite. Thanks to all who attended on a picture perfect day with fantastic racing, and to all the members of our team who helped make the event a success.

- ShimmyShimmy Shake was 5th today at Monmouth Park, but actually not a bad effort in a very tough spot, battling hard early and not giving up in the stretch, finishing in front of the bulk of a huge field. It was her best effort yet for us. Off this improved effort we’ll look for one more race for her at Monmouth in September.
- A fine debut for Smarty Cat yesterday at Monmouth Park, the heavily favored winner was much the best but she ran hard and well to be a closing 3rd, gaining on the 2nd horse in the stretch and galloping out very strongly. Saddled well, ran hard, should move forward off a promising debut. She came out of the race perfect this morning.
- Magic Musketier gets in a nice spot for his return to the races after a summer freshening, runs Aug. 29th at Del Mar. Any owner wishing to attend please email George@kenwoodracing.com for help with seating-admissions, etc. He has worked absolutely great for his return (see latest work below).
- Exchanging Ember gets in a perfect spot at Penn for next Wednesday, draws the favorable outside post in a 6 horse field and is the horse to beat in here. Been doing really well since the brief freshening and while maybe a bit light on training, is the class of the race and we expect a big effort here.
- Workouts this morning for Life On the Edge,Start A Fire, New Found Treasure and Rapstorerocks (all below) at Monmouth. There’s races for Life On the Edge, New Found Treasure and Rapstorerocks the first part of September to enter in Start A Fire could run later in September. Meanwhile Annie’s Candy had an excellent work at Los Alamitos, there’s a race for him at Del Mar next week to enter in.

Good debut for Smarty Cat, Exchanging Ember in at Penn National
- A fine debut for Smarty Cat today at Monmouth Park, the heavily favored winner was much the best but she ran hard and well to be a closing 3rd, gaining on the 2nd horse in the stretch and galloping out very strongly. Saddled well, ran hard, should move forward off a promising debut.
Enjoy this video of a nice day with a very large group of owners in attendance to cheer her on.
- ShimmyShimmy Shake runs Saturday at Monmouth Park, a tough spot, huge field, has yet to run a good race at Monmouth and will need a huge leap forward to be anywhere close in here.
- Exchanging Ember gets in a perfect spot at Penn National for next Wednesday, draws the favorable outside post in a 6 horse field and is the horse to beat in here. Been doing really well since the brief freshening and while maybe a bit light on training, is the class of the race and we expect a big effort here.
- Workouts (below) in California for Magic Musketier and Night of Idiots (below). Both doing well.
- Saturday will be another big work day at Monmouth Park

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for August 22, 2019
Another fine morning of training today at Monmouth Park, all horses doing well.
Thanks to all the co-owners who joined our sold out group #53 and best of luck with Smarty Cat in her debut tomorrow!
The 2nd annual Kenwood picnic is Sunday at Monmouth Park, over 110 people have signed up, looking forward to food, drink, racing, friends and fun on what promises to be a perfect weather day, plus the New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival and tee shirt giveaway!
- Smarty Cat doing super, couldn’t be coming into her debut any better. We don’t care about odds and neither does the horse, they run just as fast at 20 to 1 as they do at 2 to 1, but the fact she’s the very strong 2nd choice in the morning line over several horses who have already had a race or two and run well tells you how well she’s been training and how highly regarded she is. We’d ideally have preferred to run on the dirt, and if we get really lucky the race will get rained off the grass, but either way she’s ready. There’s one horse that will be less than even money and virtually unbeatable if she runs back to her exceptionally good effort at Saratoga, but Smarty Cat looks like she fits very well against the rest if she handles the grass and gets a decent trip. A first time starter always gives away an edge to the ones in here who have a race under their belt and you never know what happens in a debut (remember Life On the Edge stopped to a walk in her debut and won going away next time out for example) but we are looking for a good start to her career Friday.
- Life On the Edge seems sharp and ready to run back now. We will work her this weekend again and assuming she does well are looking at allowance or stake company for her next start in 2 weeks (several options in the first few days of Sept.).
- Start A Fire galloped strongly today, good out of a nice work, a MAJOR improvement over his slow work last week. Will get some gate work and a breeze this weekend and if all goes well will be making his debut in late September.
- Race did not go for New Found Treasure for Saturday at Monmouth Park, she’s ready to run whenever we can get something for her.
- Race did go for ShimmyShimmy Shake, she runs Saturday at Monmouth Park, please email George@kenwoodracing.com if you need any help with seating – admissions, etc.
- Giuliana Vee galloped strongly again today and is doing super at Monmouth Park. She should be ready to work in about 10 days, which would put her on track to debut in October. No problems with her shins (or anything else) since her return from the farm. She has a shot to be a very nice runner and being by Into Mischief, the leading sire in the world this year, if she has ability on the racetrack the sky’s the limit as far as her residual value.
- Solar trained today and went very well, amazingly good after acting up in the stall when a big thunder storm hit Monday. He seems recovered from his fortunately minor cuts, bumps and bruises.
- Rapstorerocks doing excellent, trained well again this morning. There’s two spots for him September 8th in the new Monmouth Park book, ideally he’ll run in the maiden special weight at 1 mile on the grass that day, a perfect spot for him as he’s bred to do just that.
- Exchanging Ember good out of her work at Penn National. Mark Salvaggio was very pleased and plans to enter her this Friday for next Wednesday.
- Night Of Idiots back in training at Golden Gate Fields with trainer Jonathan Wong and doing well in the below video of her (the horse in front, galloping strongly) this morning at Golden Gate Fields.

We will have morning training again for owners this Thursday at Monmouth Park. Let us know if you’d like to attend, space is limited.
- A fine morning of training today at Monmouth Park, take a look at these photos of Smarty Cat, Life On the Edge, Start A Fire and New Found Treasure.
- Smarty Cat doing super, as can be seen in the below photo of her prancing as she comes off the track this morning. Couldn’t be coming into her debut any better. - Start A Fire galloped strongly today, good out of a nice work, a MAJOR improvement over his slow work last week. Will get some gate work this week and if all goes well will be making his debut in late September.
- New Found Treasure will be entered tomorrow for Saturday at Monmouth, as will ShimmyShimmy Shake. Both are happy and ready to run.
- Giuliana Vee galloped strongly today and is doing super at Monmouth. She should be ready to work in about 10 days, which would put her on track to debut in October. No problems with her shins (or anything else) since her return from the farm. - Solar acted up in the stall last night when a big thunder storm hit and got cuts, bumps and bruises. Fortunately all appear to be superficial but he’ll get a few days of walking before going back to the track just to be sure he’s ok.
- Rapstorerocks doing excellent, there’s two spots for him Sept, 8th in the new Monmouth book, ideally he’ll run in the maiden special weight at 1 mile on the grass that day, a perfect spot for him as he’s bred to do just that.
- Exchanging Ember had a nice easy work today at Penn (below). Mark Salvaggio was very pleased and plans to enter her this Friday for next Wednesday as long as she’s ok out of the work tomorrow.
- Night Of Idiots back in training at Golden Gate Fields with trainer Jonathan Wong and doing well
- Magic Musketier about ready to run now.
- Starring John Wain recovered from his fever and back in training as we look for a spot for him.
- Annie’s Candy will be entered at Del Mar shortly.
- No Good Deed, Shake It Up Baby and Bullion all fine on the farm.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for August 17, 2019
HUGE work day!
What a day of training at Monmouth Park! Seven horses work, all others train, all work really well in front of a big crowd of enthusiastic owners. They should all be like this.
- The biggest news of a great morning has to be the works of Rapstorerocks and Smarty Cat. Both worked exceptionally well in company (together) today from the gate. Both came out flying and got their gate card and are ready to run. If ever a photo says a 1000 words, the attached one of their gate work does. Look at these two beautiful horses, they’ve done everything right since we purchased them at OBS in June and hopefully they will prove to be bargain purchases. We are entering Smarty Cat tomorrow for Friday at Monmouth Park for her debut and Rapstorerocks for his debut as soon as there’s a race for him.
- New Found Treasure (who worked in company with Life On the Edge). Solar and ShimmyShimmy Shake all had maintenance works at Monmouth as they wait for somewhere to run. ShimmyShimmy Shake was a bit rank early and finally settled late, Solar and New Found Treasure both went excellent (all works below). As soon as something suitable goes they will all be in, they are ready to run. Nothing on extras at Monmouth Park so far, maybe something will get put up tomorrow for next weekend for them.
- Life On the Edge excellent maintenance work too out of her impressive win, seems sharp and ready to run back now. We are looking at allowance or stake company for her next start.
- Giuliana Vee galloped strongly today and is doing super at Monmouth Park. She has a shot to be a very nice runner and being by Into Mischief, the leading sire in the world this year, if she has ability on the racetrack the sky’s the limit as far as her residual value. If all keeps going well she’ll run in early fall.

Updates, last call morning training
Last Call! Morning training at Monmouth Park on Saturday. All horses expected to train, many with timed works. All welcome, space almost full, please RSVP if you wish to attend.
- Starring John Wain runs tomorrow at Del Mar; the horse is training really well. As good as we can get him for this allowance test.
- For a good look at how ‘stats’ can be misleading, take a look at the Thoroughbred Daily News article on Jerry Hollendorfer, “Hollendorfer Files Complaint for Emergency Relief Against Pacific Racing Association” and note the section at the end of the article circled in red.
As most people know, Jerry was kicked out of Santa Anita and Golden Gate after four horses under his care died in 5 months (interestingly after Bob Baffert had two horses die at Del Mar in the first 10 days, no action was taken). Jerry had over 100 horses training, most at Golden Gate and Santa Anita but many at tracks across the nation and the article notes that in a period of almost 4 years, he had absolutely ZERO equine deaths anywhere, except at Santa Anita and Golden Gate. Perhaps that might indicate the problems lie, at least to some extent, with the track surfaces and not with the trainers who are being made scapegoats for larger industry problems? NOT that Jerry (or any trainer) doesn’t have a responsibility to protect horses under his care in every way possible, but this is a complex issue to say the least and tracks unilaterally ‘banning’ trainers with no active violations of any kind is certainly not the answer, as the courts have so far fortunately ruled.
- Looking for races for New Found Treasure, Solar and ShimmyShimmy Shake at Monmouth Park, as soon as something suitable goes, they will be in. All doing really well and are ready to run.
Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for August 11, 2019
No ice, works
- More Ice got a bit of a rough trip today at Del Mar when 6th beaten less than 3 lengths for the win. He was trapped behind a wall of horses until too late but that said, didn’t close as quickly as he has in his best efforts when he did get running room. He’s been in training without a break for almost 1&1/2 years now and is probably due for a brief freshening. Sound and trains well, probably a few weeks at a local farm and back to the track early fall.
- Starring John Wain runs Thursday at Del Mar, race went with a nice short field and the horse is training really well. Had another fine work (below). As good as we can get him for this allowance test. Any owner wishing to attend please contact George@kenwoodracing.com for assistance with seating-dining-admissions, etc.
- New Found Treasure was entered in an extra for Friday at Monmouth Park that did not go, looking for a spot to run her.
