Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for April 24, 2019
Big night, big week....
Exchanging Ember started off what will go down as one of our biggest and most exciting weeks ever on exactly the right note, breaking her maiden in style in race 5 at Penn National by 6 widening lengths. It could have been just about any distance, as she tracked the early leader in 2nd, took over the lead at the top of the stretch and drew away from the field for a very impressive win, geared down at the end while still posting a fast time for the level despite being forced out both at the start and again at the top of the stretch (see chart). Stepping up in class a bit off her good 2nd last time against males, she simply outclassed the field.
It’s been a very long wait for this talented filly as she sustained a serious injury after her debut back in January of 2018 (a dull 8th) and was on the farm recovering for most of last year. Fortunately, after giving her the time she needed she not only returned totally sound but far more mature and ready to be a racehorse. Her mother, our beloved Exchanging Fire, while running injury free throughout her long career also took time to develop, winning three stakes for us after running in claiming races early on. Exchanging Fire improved when stretched out in distance, and we are eager to give Ember a shot going long(er) as soon as we can find a suitable race for her. Kudos to trainer Mark Salvaggio and his team for their patient handling of this filly, and to Richele Grieb at Daydream Farm, where Ember convalesced last year. A hearty congratulations to the members of group #34, your patience was rewarded this evening and hopefully the best is yet to come, and also to the members of group #47 who own her brother, Start A Fire. He’s an incredibly impressive individual and Ember showcased a little of the family’s talent and heart tonight. Exchanging Fire was very special to all of us, a member of our family, and Ember did her proud tonight.
Great entry news too, as we have two horses in for Saturday to go along with Starring John Wain tomorrow (Thursday) in race 2 at Golden Gate Fields and Bullion on Friday in race 3 at Santa Anita. More Ice draws post #7 in a 9 horse field for the California Derby Saturday at Golden Gate Fields. Please let us know if you plan to attend and want assistance with seating-dining arrangements. A highly competitive race, as expected, but he’s ready for a big effort. And Magic Musketier gets in a nice allowance race, race 1 at Santa Anita Saturday, also a highly competitive spot but he also looks ready for a big race. That gives us five horses in four days at three different tracks, including the California Derby. A lot more to look forward to and the big week couldn’t have begun on a better note.
Updates on other horses:
Blue Eyed Beth: she’s ready for anything we can find for her at Gulfstream Park.
Vibrant Spirit: Nice little work this week (below), heading towards a start next month at Gulfstream.
Diamond Play: Ships into Monmouth Park tomorrow (Thursday) with the rest of Kelly Breen’s Palm Meadows contingent. There’s an allowance race for her in the book at Monmouth May 18th, Kelly thinks she’ll be ready to run if they put up an extra at Monmouth before that.
Red Shelby: Race for her April 27th at Golden Gate didn’t go, looking for a spot.
Taima The Hawk: Looking to get him back in the entries.
Run Macho Run: “Another work and hopefully we can look for a race for him”, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer
Annie’s Candy: Good out of work at Santa Anita.
Kochees: good out of his 2nd at Santa Anita. It was a realistic spot for this honest veteran horse. Off alertly, he was well back on the far turn and made a very strong, determined run to grab 2nd in a photo while gaining on the winner.
Rapid Red & Night of Idiots: Expected to return from the farm shortly.
Preacher: (group #52 two year old) Worked an easy ¼ mile last weekend, “he’s doing very well, no issues so far”, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer
Seahawk Lisa: Doing well with Eddie Woods in Ocala and ready to ship to Jerry Hollendorfer in California shortly.
Start A Fire: (group #47 two year old). Doing well in Ocala at T-Square Stud, will ship to Monmouth Park in late May.
Life On the Edge (Competitive Edge filly, group #50), Giuliana Vee (Into Mischief filly, group #51), Shakin It Up colt (group #49): All are scheduled to ship up to Monmouth Park tomorrow and arrive Friday morning, all doing excellent. Kelly Breen is eager to get started with them at Monmouth.
Look for an announcement shortly: our first morning training session of the season at Monmouth is expected to be the end of next week.
Lisa Limon: IN foal and doing well in Lexington, Ky. at Hidden Brook Farm.
As usual, you can see up to date possible entries here. Please note this is where you go to find out things like “what race, what time” etc. You can also find that information on Equibase.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for April 21, 2019
A LOT of action ahead, a huge week coming up, lots of works this weekend to kick it all off! Here’s the latest on all your horses…
More good entry news as Bullion worked absolutely great Saturday (below). Yes it was quick, but it was HOW he did that was so impressive. Off that good work he was entered and his race went with a short field April 26th at Santa Anita. Perfect spot for him to break his maiden.
Starring John Wain runs April 25th at Golden Gate Fields. Worked again today at Golden Gate Fields (below), was pointing for a race April 27th (California Derby day) on the turf, but that would have been a huge field and his turf debut, so when a dirt race at just the distance we were looking for (1 mile) came up, we decided to run.
As previously detailed Exchanging Ember runs April 24th at Penn National. Steps up in class a bit but should improve off her good 2nd last time and as well as she’s training expecting a big race from her also.
That gives us three set for this week at three different tracks from coast to coast but there’s a LOT more to come….. More Ice shipped to Golden Gate Fields from Santa Anita and worked super this morning (below), his final work for the California Derby Saturday. Please let us know if you plan to attend and want assistance with seating-dining arrangements. He’s ready for a big effort.
Blue Eyed Beth is good out of her work, race didn’t go for her at Gulfstream Park, she’s ready for anything we can find for her.
Vibrant Spirit: She’s training good, should be ready to run soon.
Diamond Play: Ships into Monmouth Park this week, expected to arrive Thursday with the rest of Kelly Breen’s Palm Meadows contingent. There’s an allowance race for her in the book at Monmouth May 18th, Kelly thinks she’ll be ready to run if they put up an extra at Monmouth before that.
Magic Musketier: Worked again today (below). Pointing for race April 27th at Santa Anita.
Red Shelby: Race for her April 25th at Santa Anita didn’t go, there’s a nice spot April 27th at Golden Gate (Ca. Derby day) to enter in.
Taima The Hawk: Looking to get him back in the entries.
Run Macho Run: He worked on Wednesday. See work below. Another work and hopefully we can look for a race for him.
Annie’s Candy: Good work today at Santa Anita (below)
Kochees good out of his 2nd at Santa Anita. It was a realistic spot for this honest veteran horse. Off alertly, he was well back on the far turn and made a very strong, determined run to grab 2nd in a photo while gaining on the winner.

Start A Fire: (group #47 two year old). Doing well in Ocala at T-Square Stud, will ship to Monmouth Park in May, maybe a little later in the month as Adam Parker feels a couple extra weeks on the farm will do him good.
Life On the Edge (Competitive Edge filly, group #50), Giuliana Vee (Into Mischief filly, group #51), Shakin It Up colt (group #49): All are scheduled to ship up to Monmouth Park this week, all doing excellent, Kelly Breen is eager to get started with them at Monmouth.

Kochees ran hard and well as he usually does, finishing a good 2nd in race 6 at Santa Anita today. It was a realistic spot for this honest veteran horse. Off alertly, he was well back on the far turn and made a very strong, determined run to grab 2nd in a photo while gaining on the winner.
Exchanging Ember: Good news as a race finally goes, she runs next Wednesday at Penn National. “She worked GREAT today”, Mark Salvaggio (see work below). Steps up in class a bit but should improve off her good 2nd last time and as well as she’s training expecting a big race from her here.
More good entry news, Starring John Wain runs April 25th at Golden Gate Fields. Good out of very fast work at Golden Gate Fields (below), was pointing for a race April 27th (California Derby day) on the turf, but that would have been a huge field and his turf debut, so when a dirt race at just the distance we were looking for (1 mile) came up, Jerry made the decision to run in a much shorter field.
More Ice: pointing for either April 28th in the $100,000 Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita or the day before in the California Derby at Golden Gate Fields on April 27th. See work below. We’re expecting a big effort in either spot. Here is a fantastic photo of More Ice training Thursday morning at Santa Anita, courtesy of photographer Ernie Belmonte!

Some updates on our three two year old OBS March purchases from the farm in South Carolina: Life On the Edge (Competitive Edge filly, group #50), Giuliana Vee (Into Mischief filly, group #51), Shakin It Up colt (group #49)…. Kip Elser at Kirkwood Stables took videos of all three training at his farm Monday in South Carolina. All doing great as you can see on the videos below, all are scheduled to ship up to Monmouth Park next week.
Take a look at our newest blog post, “Maximum Security – Minimum Work Times.”
As usual, you can see up to date possible entries here. Please note this is where you go to find out things like “what race, what time” etc. You can also find that information on Equibase.
Finally, as we come down to the final share for group #50, Competitive Edge filly Life on the Edge, we’d like to thank everyone who has joined this historic group. Think you’ll be happy to read the news below about her sire, Competitive Edge….
Life On the Edge’s sire, Competitive Edge, is presently the leading freshman sire in North America (at a very early date). An exceptional racehorse by a Kentucky Derby winner, he has incredible potential as a sire (as does the filly we bought as a racehorse and future broodmare). We picked this filly for our 50th group because we all felt she has it all. To quote Kelly Breen (who has selected dozens of stakes winners including the winner of the Belmont Stakes at auction), “I think she’s the bargain of the sale”.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for April 18, 2019
Let’s begin with a horse by horse review…
Kochees runs in race 6 at Santa Anita Friday. It’s a realistic spot for this honest veteran horse. He always tries hard. With a good trip and his best effort he’ll be very competitive in here.
Exchanging Ember: Entry for her Saturday at Penn National did not go, in fact we entered in 2 different races and neither one went. Overall, entered 5 times this week, long, short, fillies, Pa. breds, open company, even against colts once. One of the entries today was carried over, enter Friday for next Wednesday If that doesn’t go we’ll just keep looking. She’s training super and ready to run.
Blue Eyed Beth: Worked effortlessly this morning at Gulfstream Park. In good shape and she can just run anytime from here.
Vibrant Spirit: She’s training good, should be ready to run soon.
Diamond Play: Good out of work on Wednesday morning, April 17th at Palm Meadows. (work below) https://vimeo.com/331018482 .
More Ice: pointing for either April 28th in the $100,000 Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita or the day before in the California Derby at Golden Gate Fields on April 27th. See work below. Here is a fantastic photo of More Ice training Thursday morning at Santa Anita, courtesy of photographer Ernie Belmonte!

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for April 17, 2019
Diamond Play worked this morning at Palm Meadows. As you can see from the below video, she’s training well and is ready for Monmouth Park.
All three of the two year olds purchased at OBS March (Group #49: Shakin It Up-Brenda's Slew colt; Group #50: Competitive Edge-Simply Precious filly named Life on the Edge; Group #51: Into Mischief-Home Rule filly named Guiliana Vee) have been with Kip Elser at Kirkwood Stables in South Carolina since the sale ended. Kip took these two videos of the three training on Monday. All are doing great as you can see in the videos below. All three are scheduled to ship up to Monmouth Park next week.
Start A Fire will follow them from Ocala the following week.
Take a look at our newest blog post, “Maximum Security – Minimum Work Times.”
Kochees runs in race 6 at Santa Anita Friday. It’s a realistic spot for this honest veteran horse. He always tries hard. With a good trip and his best effort he’ll be very competitive in here.
Don’t forget, our Monmouth Park season kickoff party is Friday, May 3rd in Asbury Park. All welcome but space is limited and close to full now. Please RSVP if you would like to join us. We’ll have food, drink, selections for Derby Day at Churchill and opening day at Monmouth Park. We’ll also have a Q&A session “Everything you wanted to know about thoroughbred ownership, but were afraid to ask!”, we’re inviting everyone (whether you are attending or not) to submit questions to us in advance of the event. We’ll try to read and answer as many as possible at the event and post some of the highlights on our website in a Blog as well. Don’t be shy, don’t hesitate! Email any and all questions you have about training, workouts, sales, breeding, claiming, race entries, the condition book, costs, safety, thoroughbred aftercare, legal structure, accounting and business operations, etc. to us. Tough, challenging questions, simple introductory questions, all questions are welcome and appreciated. Happy to mention your name with any questions submitted or let you remain anonymous, just tell us what you prefer. This is your chance to learn more about your horses and the thoroughbred game.
Finally, if you plan to attend opening day (May 4th) at Monmouth Park and wish help with seating – admissions, kindly email Owner Services Manager, George Katzenberger ASAP.
We look forward to seeing you at Monmouth and all our events for a great season of racing!

Vibrant Spirit should start at Gulfstream Park in next few weeks.
Start A Fire well in Ocala and should ship to Monmouth Park soon, along with our three OBS March purchases who are in South Carolina now.

Kenwood Racing Stable Notes for April 13, 2019
No excuse for Harbour Way in race 6 at Parx, sat a perfect trip on the outside, made a run on the far turn like she was going to the lead, and plain flattened out to finish a well-beaten 5th. A shame as a large crowd was on hand to cheer her on. She was claimed from this race, as expected, and given how poorly she’s ran the last two races, not a bad thing.
Taima The Hawk had to be scratched today, will look for another spot.
Enjoy this video of Diamond Play’s recent work at Palm Meadows, horse is doing really well…

More Ice has a good shot to run April 28th in the $100,000 Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita, a perfect spot for him against three-year olds on the grass or the day before in The California Derby at Golden Gate Fields on April 27th, either would be an excellent spot for him against three-year olds on the grass or on Polytrack.
Races that weekend at Santa Anita for Bullion and Magic Musketier too.
Annie’s Candy and Run Macho Run likely to return to Golden Gate.
Starring John Wain worked really well and is ready for his next start scheduled for next week.

Enjoy some photos of our three new two year olds purchased at OBS March. They are in training in South Carolina now and will be heading up to Monmouth Park shortly. We will have photos of the fourth horse in California with Jerry Hollendorfer, soon. While not the perfect photos, it’s still easy to see these are really nice individuals in great health. Very happy to have had such a nice response on these horses-groups. All the owners have a lot to look forward to this summer

Group #50 - filly by Competitive Edge named Life on the Edge
Group #51 - filly by Into Mischief
Another entry to report as Taima The Hawk returns to Golden Gate Fields from Santa Anita to run Saturday in race 9. He’s not run well since shipping south and returns to the track where he’s had much past success.
That gives us two runners at two different tracks for Saturday, as Harbour Way runs in race 6 at Parx Saturday after being entered twice at Laurel Park and twice at Penn National. The good news is this is a very good spot for her; right level, right distance, good post. Parx is a bit of a tricky surface, especially first time on it, but if she can handle it, as well as she’s training she should be tough to beat in here.
As usual, you can see up to date possible entries here. Please note this is where you go to find out things like “what race, what time” etc. You can also find that information on www.equibase.com.
More Ice has a good shot to run April 28th in the $100,000 Singletary Stakes at Santa Anita, a perfect spot for him against three-year olds on the grass. He’s a grass horse and will fit very well in there. There are also races that weekend at Santa Anita for Bullion and Magic Musketier. Annie’s Candy is likely to return to Golden Gate after throwing in a dud this weekend in a logical spot, seems to run better on the GGF surface, came out of the race fine.
Blue Eyed Beth, Exchanging Ember and Run Macho Run all good out of their races last week. Blue Eyed Beth will look for a spot against winners at about the same level she just won at, Exchanging Ember will come back in a similar spot against maidens but hopefully fillies will fill this time and she won’t have to face colts. Vibrant Spirit should start at Gulfstream in next few weeks.
Some workouts to report (below) as a number of horses gear up for various races. Diamond Play worked exceptionally and exceptionally well as she nears her first start after a brief winter layoff.
Starring John Wain also worked really well as he hears up for his next start scheduled for next week.
Start A Fire well in Ocala. All others doing well.

Race finally went for Harbour Way, she runs in race 6 at Parx Saturday after being entered twice at Laurel Park and twice at Penn National. The good news is this is a very good spot for her; right level, right distance, good post. Parx is a bit of a tricky surface, especially first time on it, but if she can handle it, as well as she’s training she should be tough to beat in here.
No luck at Santa Anita last weekend but all horses came out of their races well. We knew going in we were up against it in these spots, the results will look very different next time with these runners. A good reminder of how important the right level-race is. Said it many times but when you keep yourself in the best company and your horses in the worst company, you win lots of races. When you run over your head, you don’t. Just like if your (very talented) daughter has won citywide tennis tournaments and tries a tournament against Serena Williams and other nationally ranked players, good as she is, she’s likely to look grossly overmatched.
Santa Anita Derby Day was hardly a washout, as a highly enthusiastic group of owners and their friends enjoyed an exceptional day of racing from the premier seats in the house (see the Facebook album). The winner’s circle suite at Santa Anita was Kenwood’s private playground for the entire afternoon. Nice to have MLB star Adrián Beltré and his lovely family spend part of the afternoon with us.
