results, entries & More
Thanks to our Triple Crown members for the great response so far with Group #56, all co-owners will receive the details on our lowest priced group of the year tomorrow.
- New Found Treasure was an honest 3rd in a full and tough field for the level (she was 6 to1 here off her impressive win last time out) at Penn National. This filly has had a win and four thirds in eight starts for us and always tries hard.
A ton of entries ahead for this week as the action heats up and more to come, it will be an action-filled month to start off the new decade.
- Solar runs Sunday at Gulfstream Park. The usual large, competitive field but a repeat of his last great effort would make him the horse to beat in here
- Shake It Up Baby makes his three year old debut next Wednesday at Gulfstream Park with top rider Paco Lopez aboard. Obviously will need the race after a 6 month layoff but has trained very well for this. There are a couple of horses that look tough in here, but that’s always the case at Gulfstream at this time of year. If you want a ‘teachable moment’ about how this game really works, take a look at the #4 and #10 horses in his race (see attached DRF, 5th race). Both are trained by top trainer Todd Pletcher for top owner Starlight Racing. They cost $240,000 and $200,000 respectively as yearlings. Both are making their debuts here, for $32,000 claiming. Yes, totally understand how people find it hard to fathom how someone can pay $240,000 for a horse, invest at least $75,000 more in training costs over the next two years, and offer it for sale for just $32,000 before it’s even had a shot to run a single race. These horses are working very slowly and obviously have demonstrated limited talent after months of training. At least 85% of the time (more like 90%+ actually), even if you pay hundreds of thousands of dollars at a premier sale for a really well-bred, good-looking individual, that’s what you get, a slow horse. Top owners and trainers run them where they have a shot to compete, even if it’s for a fraction of what they paid. The horse doesn’t know what you paid for him, if they are slow and you run them over their heads in a non-claiming race you almost always end up the track, start the horse off on the wrong hoof, and it may never recover from that. Very tough for most owners to wrap their heads around how this business works, especially in terms of claiming, but like it or not this is reality. That’s why we don’t overpay at sales AND run horses where they belong, just as these smart and successful owners are doing here. Buying an unraced yearling or two year old is nothing like investing in stocks or bonds or real estate, it’s like trying to find a 14 year old high school kid who is going to make it to the NBA or NFL. Thousands will try and a few dozen will actually make it.
- Race for Night of Idiots finally went on the 5th try, she runs next Thursday at Golden Gate Fields in a spot where she should be very competitive, even though it’s a tough group for the level. ShFields e worked again this morning and continues to be razor sharp.
- Giuliana Vee doing well and will be entered tomorrow for next weekend at Penn. She’s gradually improving with each start and we are hoping to see her in the winner’s circle soon.
