Entries, works and more, another huge California weekend
- A big entry day in California as three were entered at two tracks for Sunday and all three went. At Santa Anita, the highlight of the day (and one of the highlights of the year!) will be More Ice in the $150,000 Cinema Stakes, race 5, on the turf. He’s been pointing for this race and comes into it training absolutely super since his close 3rd in the California Derby in April (which was his 3rd career stakes placing). The right surface, the right distance and while we rarely talk much about jockeys, he’ll be ridden by one of the great ‘money riders’ in history in hall of fame jockey Mike Smith. While all stakes are super tough and this is certainly no exception IF he fires his best shot AND gets a good trip he should be in the money again and has a legitimate chance to collect his first career stakes win.
- Also on Sunday we have the career debut of Preacher, our first two year old of 2019 to reach the entry box, in race 2 at Santa Anita. He’s been training very forwardly for his debut. This will be a super-tough spot (a maiden special weight with a huge $65,000 purse attracts premier young horses who cost many times his modest $40,000 purchase price) but most of the time career debuts are learning experiences anyway so it’s time to begin. Hopefully he’ll show some ability and move forward from this race. Recall More Ice was a distant but closing 3rd of five horses in his career debut about this time last year and went on to bigger and better things. Not saying he’ll end up that good but he appears to have speed and talent and we’re excited to have him in the entries.
- And finally we have Starring John Wain running Sunday in race 8 at Golden Gate Fields. Back a bit quick off his last race but we’ve been running against open company looking for a Ca. bred race and this looks like a decent spot for him if he can handle the quick turnaround and an overflow 11 horse field to boot. He’s been in the money in all of his last 8 starts and should be right there again.
All owners please let us know if you need help with seating-dining arrangements at either track, should be a great day of racing!
- Start A Fire arrived safely this morning at Monmouth Park, no problems (see attached photos outside Kelly Breen’s barn, blurry photos but he’s obviously well). Will gallop this weekend as he begins his training.
- Shake It Up Baby and Life On the Edge are expected to have timed works at Monmouth just as soon as the weather permits.
- Giuliana Vee will likely work this weekend, probably Sunday.
- ShimmyShimmy Shake and Federal Dominance will train this week(end) as well.
- Blue Eyed Beth worked nicely this morning (below) as she points to her next start in June. “Hi Robb, good work, no pressure, nice even work, scoped clean, I was very happy with that”, Ron Spatz.
- Vibrant Spirit’s good out of her last work and ready to run next week “Good morning, Vibrant Spirit breezed 5/8 out ¾ for Memorial Day, in hand, pretty even with a little bit of finish, came back great, waiting for the race to come up, I think she’s in great shape”, Ron Spatz.
- Maybe another claim at Monmouth Park this weekend, stay tuned!
