Kenwood is well known for being a high-percentage successful racing stable but perhaps the most amazing statistic, and the one we are most proud of, is our record with two year olds purchased at public auction. Over the last four years we've purchased a total of 27 horses for prices ranging from $20,000 to $77,000, a tiny fraction of the averages at the sales we shop at where people regularly pay hundreds of thousands (sometimes millions) of dollars for a single horse (literally!). Of 27 horses purchased to date from 2011 - 2014, all 27 have started, 26 have won, 2 are graded stakes horses, and almost all have earned considerably more than their purchase price. (note, our first two year old starter of 2015, Title Fight, broke his maiden at Gulfstream Park at first asking to add to our totals). The numbers speak for themselves. When you see how many horses people have paid $500,000+ for at the same sales that have never won a race, it's clear just how good our methodology for selecting quality racehorses at value prices is. Let's begin with some overall numbers. The statistics for all of North America for 2014 for two year olds are in and here is how everyone did:
Out of 21,886 named registered 2YO foals, 8,115 started (37%)
Out of the 8115 starters, 2,495 won (31% of starters) or (11% of all named registered foals)
For Kenwood, all 6 of our 2 year olds purchased at a sale in 2014 started (100%) and 4 won (66% of starters).
For the last 4 years combined, Kenwood purchased a total of 27 two year olds. Of those 27 horsess, ALL 27 started (100%), 26 won (97% of starters). 21 of the 27 horses purchased have already earned more than thier purchase price as of 6-1-15 (many of the others are newly turned three year olds still racing). 14 have won allowance races, two are Graded Stakes placed stakes winners. Collectively, our purchases have already earned more than twice thier total purchase prices. Here's a rundown, horse by horse....
We all know it's ultimately a numbers game, a few good horses pay for a lot of unsuccessful ones. Just like with human athletes, only a few elite competitors make the elite ranks (play in the NFL, NBA, or run in graded stakes races), but if you do the proper research at the sales, don't overpay for the horses you buy and treat the horses you purchase properly, most of horses can win races, earn more than thier purchase prices, and give you a lot of fun and excitement along the way!
