- First up at Gulfstream Park was an improved effort for Pango, who was coming off a truly awful debut for us (7th, beaten 15 lengths, never in the hunt). This time he went right to the lead, held it for most of the race, and tired a bit late to finish 4th, beaten just under 4 lengths for the win. It was without question a step forward and hopefully he’ll be ready for another move forward next time.
- Next up at Gulfstream Park was the disappointment as Life on the Edge had her body turned the wrong way when they opened the gate, was caught flatfooted and squeezed, and after pressing the pace stopped to a walk and was eased to the wire, finishing 5th and last in the shortened field when the race was taken off the turf. Hopefully she’ll come back ok out of this and will have the opportunity to make amends at Monmouth Park, where she will ship to in about 10 days.
- A really rough break on Saturday with Lookinlikeaqueen at Gulfstream Park. Broke flatfooted and bumped right at the start, costing her at least 4-5 lengths and putting her in last in the early going. Made nice multiple moves between horses and ended up 6th, beaten just over 2 lengths for the win and (seriously), ¾ of a length for 2nd in a blanket 7 horse finish. As the rider said, “if she breaks ok, she wins”. In an overflow field with the highly unfavorable #11 outside post in a 12 horse field it all comes down to the trip, you just can’t afford to give away several lengths at the start. She was claimed from us as we knew going in, it was the same optional claiming race we claimed her out of 2 races back with a huge $41,000 purse that she can only run in for the claiming price. A good break and a win here and we make real $, instead we end up with the claiming price back minus 2 months of expenses.
- In other news Fire’s Finale is training absolutely great at Gulfstream Park and we are excited to see him make his debut. He was going to work this weekend but the track was absolutely a sea of mud this morning so trainer Ron Spatz will give him a couple of days and probably work him Tuesday or Wednesday. If all goes just right from here he’s about 3-4 works meaning 30-40 days from being ready to run.
- Seven Seven also doing really well at Overbrook Farm, he’ll ship into Monmouth Park as soon as trainer Kelly Breen’s other horses arrive from Florida in early June.
- New Found Treasure, Giuliana Vee, Rapstorerocks and No Good Deed all well at Penn National. Like everyone we are waiting for racing to resume at Penn.
