- Tracy Ann's Legacy good out of an impressive wire to wire win in the feature race on opening day of the premier Gulfstream Park winter meet yesterday. This super-successful claim offers a couple of ‘teachable moments’. First, as explained many times, much of racing is the trip. Yesterday, she broke like a shot and Paco played ‘catch me if you can’ for the entire race. Last time, she broke slowly, never made the lead, and was a tiring and well beaten 4th (despite trying hard every step of the way). People have trouble understanding how a horse can look so good in one race and so bad in another because they think of them as machines that should have a similar speed number every race. When a horse like this makes the lead by themselves, they are very very tough to run down, if they get into a speed battle early they frequently tire badly and stop to a walk.
Second, this filly has an absolutely awful way of moving; she looks like an old-fashioned eggbeater walking, galloping, and running, her legs going sideways. Most horses who move like this don’t make it to the races or run a couple of times and have to be retired because they can’t physically stand up to the rigors of training. There’s a colt on the early Derby trail for next year featured in The Blood-Horse last week with a similar way of going. You’d never buy horses like these at a sale and rightfully so, because 95%+ aren’t going to stand up to training.100% of all the two year olds we’ve purchased at sales have started and over 90% have won because we avoid horses who move like this as unproven youngsters, but every so often there’s one that disproves the rule because they are raceHORSES not raceCARS. Once they make it to the races and demonstrate soundness and ability, you don’t worry so much about pedigree, conformation, etc. because the results speak for themselves. Tracy Ann has already had a terrific career, sound and talented with her 8th career win yesterday, along with 6 seconds and 3 thirds from 21 career starts and career earnings over $225,000 to date. Once they hit the track, some beautifully conformed horses with terrific pedigrees have zero talent or break down and some horses who move like an eggbeater are fast and sound. You play the odds but with living, breathing animals you just never know. Occasionally you see a tennis player with an unorthodox swing, a basketball player with a horrible shooting motion, a baseball pitcher with a really odd way of moving his arm who make it in the big leagues. You wouldn’t teach anyone to move like they do, but for them it works.
- Adhwaa was entered this morning and finally a race went for her. She runs Sunday in a 9 horse field at Laurel Park with a top rider. She’s doing excellent, sitting on a big effort here with a repeat of her last (a fast closing 2nd at Parx last month). Owners are permitted on site at Laurel Park, let us know if you plan to attend.
- Life On the Edge shipped to Rory Huston at Overbrook Farm to resume training, arrived safely and went right out to the track and trained a mile this. The brief bit of R&R did her a world of good after a long campaign this year and she looks ready to get back to action now. After about 30 days she should be ready to ship into Kelly Breen at Belmont Park and if all goes well she’ll be running in New York this winter.
- Fire's Finale got the worst possible post #1 in an overflow 15 horse field for the Pa. Nursery Stakes at Parx next Monday (the exact opposite draw to Tracy Ann above who drew the perfect post). He gets the leading rider at Parx, Mychel Sanchez, has been training exceptionally well for this and comes into it fresh and fit with an experience edge over most of these. In a field this large especially breaking from the rail it’s all about the trip he gets (as it is with most races but even more so here). It should be an exciting day and hopefully a good ending to a great two year old year for him. Please email George@kenwoodracing.com if you plan to attend. Remember Covid restrictions can change day to day in terms of access so please check with us before you go to Parx, at the moment owners ARE admitted. After the race, Fire’s Finale will head down to Ocala for a little R&R to have him fresh and fit for a big three year old campaign next year.

- Seven Seven is expected to join Life On the Edge in training at Overbrook farm in just a few weeks, doing excellent in his final days of R&R at Sunset Meadow Farm.
- Pango well and happy in Ocala at de Meric farm. He’ll get turnout in a nice paddock for about 30 days, then daily swimming for about 30 days, and then go back into training with the goal of having him fit and ready to return to trainer Mark Salvaggio at Penn by the end of the winter and ready to run when the first turf races appear in the northeast next spring. He had a terrific year for us, ending with two straight impressive wins, and we are looking forward to another big year with him in 2021.
- Lisa Limon and weanling by Liam’s Map both very well in Kentucky. We’re pleased to announce Lisa will be bred to the very popular young sire Bolt d’Oro in 2021. An exceptionally fast and beautifully bred horse, Bolt d’Oro was bred to 214 mares in 2019 and his first foals to hit the sales ring averaged over $90,000 as weanlings this year. Lisa is due to foal in early March.
